Only needs to be registered with DogsWest if you want to compete  The only registration you need to train at a club is a club membership!

So I can join up, and then if she bombs out and doesnt pick it up, I dont bother about registering her to compete, but if she is a star, then all I have to do is sign her up... I like the sounds of that

OK - Silly question, regarding training etc

Are all dogs pretty much under control. Reason I ask, because Roxy doesnt like dogs getting in her face, she is very obedient, will come if I say come, etc but just worry about dogs rushing up to her

No. Assume worst case scenario if you want to train at a club. The only way you can avoid things as much as possible is to train privately  When I used to do classes, some girl came with her aggressive dog and left it in group stays and on numerous occasions it "went for" in a nasty way the dog next to it. Needless to say, I avoided being near her then left group classes pretty swiftly after that. :mad

Oh it wasn't just group stays, this girl let it offlead in the block heelwork that most clubs do and any dog that got within a 3 metre radius of it, it went for it!

Not all dogs are aggressive, you also get people who let their friendly dog greet every dog just because it's friendly, which is also annoying. Yes I have a very social tart (Ruby), but I don't let her go up to other dogs if I can help it.

I wouldnt class her as dog aggressive, she doesnt go for things out of turn, just if she gets a dog that is overly in her face she will warn, she has never been aggressive as such. I have been to an obedience class with her, and she handled the interaction part fine. I am just cautious,, and perhaps overly cautious because I know she can be touchy.

It's not you and your dog I would be worried about, it's the others letting their friendly or uncontrollable ones getting in her face if she knows she doesn't like it. You can keep your distance as much as possible and ask others not to approach you if it helps? Also letting the teacher know so they can tell the class to keep their distance might be useful if you think its necessary? I'm not saying a class wouldn't be suitable for you, but you asked if all dogs are under control at class and my answer would be a "no"

Thanks  Perhaps I will bring her down for a stroll one night, and see how she copes. Then I can leave with no obligation.

I think it may be too late to enrol anyway for this semester, which will be fine if I have tafe.

Or perhaps training can be held at our house, she welcomes everyone into our backyard cause she thinks its playtime

My take on it as long as my dog is under control then go for it and its up to others to keep their dogs from being in your dogs face. If the dog isn't seeking out other dogs aggressively and leaving you to do so then why should be prevented from having fun with your dog.

Chances are your not the only one with a dog who doesn't like having other dogs in its face and I wouldn't not give it a go for that reason.

And yes if my dog curls a lip at your overly-friendly (RUDE) dog because you haven't got it under effective control and we are in the middle of training something then tough. I am not going to encourage it but you should be doing something about keeping your dog under control.

I presume the context is agility training and if it is I am sure you wouldn't be the only person out there training with a dog who doesn't like other dogs getting in its face. For fear of making to many broad generalisations I will say that there are a lot of agility dogs who probably aren't keen on other dogs in their personal space and particularly when they are doing what they constitute as work.

Thanks Ness.. I realised I made her out to sound like a horrible dog. We dont know what her past was, she was dumped in a bush block and no-onr claimed her, then she claimed us as hers, and will stay with us forever! She has only ever warned 2 dogs, in the almost 3 years we've had her and they have been over the top friendly. I have taken her to shows, obedience training, DOL meets and elsehere. I think I am just overly cautious.

C and R - hope you don't mind me asking, but what are you going to study at TAFE? my youngest has just started preschool and I am looking into my options. I am keen to chat to anyone about study/work LOL. I am a research assistant- science by qualification, but am trying to find a more school time friendly work option :-) YOu don't have to answer if it is too personal :-)

CnR - not at all! Millie doesn't like dogs getting in her face either (or her privates!), but it hasn't stopped me from attending training. Only last night at agility, a GSP lunged at her so she gave it a serious "back off" bark. As ness said, you just take care to stay away from other dogs and keep your dogs attention on you

Well RS you haven't seen me if somebody lets there dog get in the face of one of mine  . Mine are crated when not out working and I have been quick to shove the overly friendly dogs out of the faces of both of mine if they have decided to interfere.

I also don't have those sort of attention issues with either of mine - if they are working they are working and especially the one that doesn't like dogs in her face.

Kenz at only 14kg is also easy enough to either lift up or stick behind me and body block the offending dog.

Kyzer doesn't like strange dogs approaching him either, in most cases he is okay with it and doesn't react but if he is really nervous he will growl or snarl, we generally don't have a problem at training, there is the odd dog but the instructors and other bystanders usually act pretty quickly to capture roaming dogs.

Even with Millie who will warn other dogs away from her if they get too close and she doesn't like it, I have to say, she's SUCH a pleasure to train! She would prefer to be with me than pay attention to other dogs, which makes such a refreshing change from training Ruby the social tart!! I can't go near other dogs with Ruby or she'll be bouncing around the place from dog to dog. So we keep our distance from others, unless we are specifically training focus around people and dogs who have given us permission to heel around them for this purpose (and we only do this around the obedience gurus who have well trained dogs :mad)

I had Millie sitting amongst other dogs last night and she didn't care. If some sniffed to say hello (we had heaps of Border puppies surrounding us!), she would sniff back but then attention was back on me. If she feels threatened she will warn them, but otherwise just doesn't generally give two hoots! Love training her!!!

I have just been to Red Dot to buy CiderBear a chain - since she is 2 leads from 2 nights out so far this week.

While there - I also purchased two imitation i-squeak balls (the small ones - ok they are not as good as the genuine i-squeaks as the rubber is much tougher so they are harder to squeak - but at $2.99 each I thought that I would give them a go.

I am going to try for Human Resources. If you want PM me your email address and I will email you the list of courses that are available Part time, which have the times on them. I work full-time so can only do PT
