Cichlabxr
Hi all, My son brought home a dog he found. We had her scanned and she has no chip. We placed ads in lost and found but were loathe to surrender her. We followed the correct protocol other than taking her to the pound. We have had her for a few weeks now. We can't do a thing with her!!! She becomes hysterical if we try to put a lead on her and won't settle down. She badly needs a wash but again she goes beserk, we half washed her but what an ordeal. You would think we were attacking her the noises she makes. In general she is very distrustful but so far not aggressive. We don't want to surrender her to the pound but think it might be better for her if someone with more experience had her. She looks to be a kelpie cross. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you put your name down for her she can serve her time and be legally adopted by you. Once she is legally yours, I'd be calling in a professional trainer. How old is she? She may never have worn a lead or have been handled before.
Dogs4Fun
And there may well be a poor owner out there searching for her. Please do the right thing and take the dog to the pound to give her a chance to be reunited with her owner.
Paganman
If someones lost there dog the first place they go is the pound and if someone keeps the dog at their house they might never find it.Not everyone would check newspapers or internet sights but most will check at the pounds.Im think in some states its law that strays have to go to the pound otherwise the finder is keeping something that in the eyes of the law doesnt belong to them
megan_
The owner is most probably *frantically* trying to find their dog and are looking at the pound - the place you're supposed to look! Please surrender the dog. You can put your name down for it if it isn't claimed within a certain number of days or arrange with a rescue group to help her. Cichlabxr
I will surrender her. She is approx 15-18 months old. The state she was in when he found her was dreadful. She was just skin and bone and very fearful. Thanks for the advice.
Cichlabxr
ps. How do I "arrange with a rescue group to help her." Don't think owner is "frantically" looking for her ie state she was in and NOT microchipped.
Sandra777
Don't think owner is "frantically" looking for her ie state she was in and NOT microchipped. Is she has been missing for several weeks it's quite possible she could be very fearful, skinny etc and still have a good owner. A lot of rural dogs may well have never been on a leash and many dogs are not used to bathing. I don't know where you are but in Queensland it's not been compulsory to microchip until this year. Good on you for caring and helping her though and I hope she finds someone to love her. Edited November 13, 2009 by Sandra777

The dog might have been roaming for weeks. Owners could be frantic - you have no way of knowing what her story is. Once she's lawfully back with you, that's the time to focus on her behaviour. I'm glad you're doing the right thing and surrendering her. Edited November 13, 2009 by poodlefan
