Vickie
We have Buddy, a foster here at the moment. He is very recently desexed but is still very much a male in his stance/demeanor. He has as nice a temperament as I have ever seen in a dog. I am yet to find a fault in him. Trim loves Buddy, is constantly flirting with him. Buddy loves Shine, she likes him but not as much as Trim does. Noah wants to play with Buddy. Buddy is appropriately polite to Noah & recognises him as the boss around here. Zeus (who doesn't usually go well with entire dogs) has been posturing around Buddy, being a right pain. Buddy thinks Zeus is an idiot, not worthy of his attention & just turns his head to the side & walks away. This morning was hilarious. Zeus on seeing Bud got all postury. Happy Bud ran up in a playful way, did a couple of play bows & some happy kisses. Zeus looked confused for a second & now they are mates . Buddy loves to run laps of the yard with the tennis ball in his mouth, inviting the others to chase him. He is not happy unless everyone is in the game & will go over to whoever is not participating & invite them. What a happy bunch, I could watch them all day....and probably will . corvus
Buddy sounds like Kivi. Kivi tends to win dogs over with kisses and nuzzles, but sometimes he gets a little too intimate with his kisses and strange dogs are like "Um, excuse me. Really not that comfortable with this. We only just met!" He also feels it is vitally important to greet EVERY dog that comes to the park. He doesn't need to play with all of them, but he just needs to introduce himself to all of them. Vickie
It's interesting b/c I usually see licking to be an insecure & submissive behaviour...but this was very clearly "Hi mate, happy to see you, c'mon let's go play"... and it worked . He's just a really strong, stable dog. He may have a fantastic home lined up. My fingers are crossed, the longer he stays, the harder it is going to be to part with a dog like this. He tugs like a demon & has fantastic obedience, loves all dogs, is great with the kids & gorgeous with my kitten. He is a dream. Tassie
Yes - love watching dynamics too. My Miss Kirra is usually the play police - will watch, but not join in (although she and Rory play with each other every day ). Rory at 13 months, loves to play and run - since he's entire, I do watch him carefully, and select the dogs he plays with. He loves a friend's young Golden Retriever boy, and they play nicely - but occasionally with some growls. The GR lives with a BC bitch, desexed, and an entire male BC who is actually Rory's half uncle, and whom Rory has worshipped and grovelled to ever since he was a baby. The other evening after training, Rory and Wilson, the Goldie, were playing and doing play growls, and the senior male came over to defend his young GR family member - Rory absolutely flattened himself - Sir, yes, Sir. Then when i called him away, he went back to playing with everyone, including the GR - and by then, his uncle must have decided that he'd done enough playground duty, and just let them play. Fingers crossed for a lovely home for Buddy - even if it turns out not to be at your place, Vickie.
gsdog2
My GSD girl is just like Buddy and Kivi . I have three dogs and she's the youngest (11mths) and she alternates from one to the other inviting them to play, with them taking it in turns to keep her happy. I wonder what it would be like if we got my girl Indi, Buddy and Kivi together - ohhh what fun !!!!!

If his possible home does not go ahead let us know and we can place him on the flyball website as rescue needing a home.

corvus
It's interesting b/c I usually see licking to be an insecure & submissive behaviour Maybe so, but insecure and submissive don't have to go hand in hand. Kivi is a confidently submissive dog, if that makes sense. He will approach any dog and he'll be flashing submissive signals as he does it, but he LOVES meeting stange dogs. There's nothing insecure in the way he interacts with other dogs. He knows exactly what he is doing, and that is loving up to his new BFF. I love watching Kivi, because he is such a sweet soul that he gets through life without any aggressive signals at all. Well, the ocassional one that is so subtle I hesitate to call it aggressive. You could easily miss it if you weren't looking for it. Kivi is a lover, not a fighter. It never seems to cross his mind to snark at someone no matter how obnoxious they are being or how tired he is of them. Nonetheless, he is quite confident and out-going. I find it fascinating that he seems just as keen to get physical contact from other dogs as he is to get physical contact from humans. This morning he was being particularly good as a lab came past and was allowed to greet her. He had never met this dog, but he somehow thought it was okay to move straight from touching noses to nuzzling her ear. It wasn't the nuzzling that bothered her so much as suddenly having this dog she'd only just met pushing past her nose and getting his shoulder under her chin so he could nuzzle her ear. She tensed up more, and Kivi was in the complete wrong position to see it, staring at her ear as he was. OH had the leash and called him away, but the owner of the lab started tugging her away when her head was still over Kivi's shoulder, so inevitably the owner actually pulled her further into Kivi's space, making her MORE uncomfortable and her hackles came up. Fortunately, she didn't do anything and Kivi came away, but I can see why some people don't let their dogs meet other dogs on leash at all. Jigsaw
My Paxy is very social, much like Kivi. She loves to meet other dogs (and people) and play is her middle name! She has very good social skills IMO, most often on seeing another dog she stops and checks it out, after which she will either bypass the dog or greet it. She is almost two and the other week she met a young (9mths) Belgian Shepherd who insisted on keeping his nose up her bottom. Well she clamped down her tail (it's usually always up) and then he started on her face. She kept turning and doing a snarky snap at him but he still didn't get the message but she never got nasty with him! She just did her best to avoid him. I love watching dogs interact, signs are so subtle and quick sometimes.

Lablover
Great timing for this thread. The dynamics has certainly changed today with having a bitch in season (day 10) with three entire males. Expected but my very easy going boy who has never had a natural mating is strutting and has displayed some interesting surprising behaviour. wherezaball
vickie if your possible home falls through I may have one up here in QLD for this boy. Great home, people already do flyball and the hubby has now got "the bug" but wants his own dog to run. His wife's Cocker Spaniels are not fast enough for him How old is Buddy? I have sent them the thread and will get back to you if they are interested. cheers Edited November 9, 2009 by wherezaball
