Papillon_lover
Hi, I have several Papillons and have a feeling one is blind in one eye (all my paps are under 2years) I guess firstly any help or advice would be greatly appreciated I am not being overly specific here and know that it wont help for specific help But I guess just after general support, ideas, signs, your past experiences etc. Is it usually a genetic condition? Can I show? Any advice would be greatly appreciated I do have a few other issues lol if you feel you can help please PM me ;) Papillon Lover
persephone
What did the vet say? Any suspicion of visual disturbance should be checked out - there may be a treatable cause.... I cannot help with the genetic causes or the showing.... but would guess if it IS a genetic condition- that you would not be showing or breeding with that line.... Kirty
Get him seen by a vet and then an eye specialist if necessary. No point asking questions when you don't even know what you are dealing with. And if he IS blind in one eye, I would want to know why, what caused it, etc and no, I wouldn't show him. gareth
Paps are prone to PRA which most certainly is genetic, but it would appear there is no test available?? How much knowledge do you have of the health issues in the breed? http://www.gtg.com.au/AnimalDNATesting/ind...uid=080.150.010 I do have a few other issues lol if you feel you can help please PM me Wouldn't it be better to take your dog to an eye specialist? Papillon_lover
I knew about PRA in the breed, and to be honest I researched the lines of this dog... If my pets had it I guess it wouldnt suprise me as a 'pet breeder' may not have intentional bread the dogs or known about it I only really noticed it tonight so will be going off to the vet tomorrow. Would an experianced breeder pick something like this up? It's actually one of my new puppies that I have noticed this in :s
gareth
Would an experianced breeder pick something like this up? An experienced breeder would surely know if there was PRA in their lines. Suggest you speak to the breeder and see what they have to say about it. So you bred the pup that has the problem?
Papillon_lover
So you bred the pup that has the problem? No I actually bought it from a breeder I do not have females but not entire Thats why I guess I'm not sure what to do... where I stand... Its clearly not an external ingury I think I am more disapointed then anything. To be honest I dont think I would have taken it if I knew. I bought it for the show ring PS. This might sound silly but I'm actually a bit scared to go back to the breeder :s Edited November 5, 2009 by Papillon_lover
puggy_puggy
Take your dog to an eye specalist. They can perform all the tests needed to determine if the dog is blind, partially blind etc. Once you have confirmation and documentation from the specalist inform the breeder of the outcome. If it is a genetic condition I would not be showing the dog let alone breeding from it. Goodluck.
Papillon_lover
I wouldn't use a dog for breeding to be honest if there was something wrong (health wise any way... just to be safe) At this stage not looking at breeding just yet Thank you for your advice so far We'll see what the vet has to say tomorrow See if I can fine a specilest out here lol

This might sound silly but I'm actually a bit scared to go back to the breeder :s You need to speak with the breeder. If the breeder is worth their salt, they should take the pup back. Get a diagnosis first. If it is a genetic condition I would not be showing the dog let alone breeding from it. puggy the OP was asking about showing, not breeding. oakway
Take the pup to the vet and have the eye checked out. It may have just scratched the eye and an eye ulcer may be forming. Keep the pup in the dark or in a dark as possible room, do not let it out in the sun. If possible take it out to relieve its self in the most shaded areas. Elfin
If it only in one eye, it is highly unlikely to be PRA. PRA will present as night-blindness, dilated pupils, very green pupils at night (tapetal hyper-reflectivity). Almost always occurs in both eyes. If you honestly feel it has vision loss in one eye, at under two years of age, I'm betting juvenile/congenital cataract. See an eye specialist. Papillon_lover
Came back from the vet this morning :s Very upset - Puppy is blind in One eye and partialy blind in the other ;) He wont recover, and there isnt anything I can do What would you do??? Breeder wants me to take it back to have it put down :D Whats it like living with a blind dog???
persephone
What did the vet say was the cause of the blindness? Living with a blind dog - well- it is doable- your dog is ok so far? It will learn very well to cope - provided you don't change furniture or things too often..and help it along by providing scent clues, or sound clues :D Dogs rely on their noses first, then their ears... How old is the pup? if you do not want the responsibilty of caring for this pup-(and it is extra work)then start now to find a home where pup can be secure and happy We have had old blind dogs here- and they coped ok..they were old, and didn't move about much anyway.. so that was easier.. Sorry you have to reconsider your options now ;)
becks
if the dog is young and still has growing to do and the cause of the blindness is cataracts, then they were formed about 3 weeks before the pup was born, as the dog and eye grows from that point, the eye will be able to see more around the cataract. Dogs can cope well with partial or full blindness, it depends on how busy the home is though
Elfin
Take the pup to a veterinary opthalmologist. Get a definitive diagnosis. If your pup has been visually impaired since birth, it will cope extremely well, as it does not know any different. www.animaleyecare.com.au/aec/copingwithblindpet.html
