Any Thoughts?

On Saturday Tina (ridgeback) was inside. She had just been let in. I went to have a shower and when I came back there was horrid diarhea all over the carpet. Very unlike her to have an accident like that inside (and yes thank you it was all over cream carpet  )

We thought it might be a bad batch of dog meat so threw it away and gave the dogs BBQ chook and rice

Then on Sunday Henry (DDB) had runny poos so we have kept them on the BBQ chook and rice

Now today Charlie has an upset tummy and I can hear it gurgling all day and he is actively seeking out grass to eat. His poos were softer than normal and a yellow colour

Tina had also still got sloppy poo and it is yellow and mucousy

The only one who hasn't got an upset tummy is Pepe. Pepe is generally kept in a seperate yard and has a different diet as he is a porker and is on Jenny Craig for dogs at the moment

Stomach bug? Local water supplies?

We do have recycled tank water in our garden but the dogs bowls are always filled from inside the house

My bet is it's the latest bug that is doing the rounds. It's been all through NSW and also some in QLD have had it. It seems to impact more on pups but others with adults have had it too.

The good news is that it only lasts 24 hours, the bad news is it's stinks.

Most of the people who I know , have also questioned the food that they have fed their dogs.

Keep the fluids up

I would never give BBQ chicken  to an unwell dog - especially the store bought variety as it is rubbed with alot of salt and flavours some of which are artificial.

Check the garden to see if there is anything around the place like rotten bones or dead birds etc

If you are sarisfied that everything else is fine with the health of the dog then you could try cooking up some chicken & rice.

depending on the size of your dog (I have Dobermanns) I usually fill a large pot with water and add a whole double chicken breast & a frame or 2 and simmer them for an hour to really cook them and get flavour into the stock, then I add a couple of cups of rice and let it cook for at leat 3 times the time specified so that it is overcooked. After simmering the rice and when the pot is ready, I remove the chicken frames and discard them (Do Not Feed Cooked Bones to the dog) I then carefully drain the pot keeping the stock and separating the chicken & rice, I fork shred the chicken and put it into a container in the fridge and the rice also goes into a container. Make sure that all the items are well refridgerated and used within 3 days.

When feeding your dog - feed a few times a day in smal quantities (warm the stock slightly - so blood temp) start with just the stock which has starch from the rice - then slowly add a small amount of rice to the stock and make it like soup with rice - then add more rice and less stock - finally serve just the rice and chicken mix adding in the chicken slowly so a not to overwhelm the gut with too much protein.

If the dogs are not drinking and seem to get dehydrated then take them to the vet - otherwise try the above for a couple of days and see how they go, just make sure they are drinking lots of water - do pinch tests on skin to make sure they are not dehydrated.

I hope that is some help to you. Don't forget to update us on your pups condition too please ;)

I have found that Inner Health Plus tablets for humans can help repopulate gut flora to help get over this. It certainly helped mine recover from giardia when they were 6 months old. One tablet two days running is all that is needed. You can get them from the chemist.

We had this exact same problem just a couple of days ago. Oscar had the most terrible stomach grumbles, then came the diarrhea. He didn't eat his normal meals for around a day and was constantly eating grass. It was only a 24/48 hour thing, but boy did it effect him. And the smell was horrific. hopefully it passes soon, glad I only had one going through it. Hope they get well soon!

Thanks everyone. I am inclined to think it is a short term tummy bug as they are otherwise acting normally - just have foul butts!

I hope your dogs recover soon Winterpaws. But a tip for getting runny poo out of the carpet. If you get up as much as you can with paper or whatever, then cover the patch with cheap shampoo or the kind of cleaner which is a bit thick and viscous the stuff which has run into the carpet rises to the surface and be cleaned off. You'll then need to clean the patch with clean water a few times so that the cleaner is all out.

I just went through something similar to this with Moss except it lasted about 4 days. First 3 days he just had diahrea but no other symptons and it didn't really smell. Next day he had really smelly diahrea, very rumbly tummy but no temp and acting flat. I locked him in his crate after the first night so he had to wake me up to go out rather than spread it all over the lounge room floor again.

Took him to the local vet for the first time when thew rumbly tummy and smelly poo came (I'm new in the area) who proceeded to test him for pancreatitis (fair enough) and did another blood test then recommended a specific antibiotic that they didn't have in stock but would try to get in next day. Next day no antibiotic and it might take a week to come in so I said to forget it and I would just go on treating him as I had been - chicken and rice as he was already just about back to normal.

If folks sense that a tummy bug is mild... then I will recommend charcoal tablets!!

They help absorb toxins, and will also help firm up gut contents.

warning: they may negate or lessen the effect of other medications!

Anything here with diarrhoea gets masses of charcoal...either the tablets ,which are expensive... or some clean bulk charcoal, ground up to powder. It can be mixed in food, or, given per mouth easily if in tablet form.

We have been using it for many many years... humans, lambs, calves, dogs, pigs.....so can estimate dosage etc . I am not going to suggest dosages to folks on here...just in case :mad

It is more than what the bottle says.....
