Mobile Hydrobath/groomer

My problem with these sorts of franchise things is that you don't have to be a qualified dog groomer.

What's 'qualified' though? You don't have to be qualified to work in a salon either. Although I agree the quality of work is rarely there from mobiles.

Ruth only bathes (or did so when I used her years ago), so if you were looking for clipping she wouldn't be able to assist there.

She still washes my 'uncles' Shepherd and they love her - she was also very understanding with the D.

Will ask round here for some independent mobile groomers (who also don't have to be qualified)

Someone I work with said that a friend of hers was going to buy one of the grooming franchise vans but not only didn't have a dog herself, also knew nothing about them.

Franchisees are given training.. I'm just not sure how much. But for a wash and blow dry and nail trim (which is the bulk of their business), how much do they need?

Theres actually more to just a bath, blow dry and nails than people may think...The bath is the most important part of any groom, and if not done correctly, can cause alot of problems for the dog.

For example, there are a variety of shampoos out there for a reason. different coats require different types of shampoos to bring out different effects in the coat. If the skin is abnormal, there are different medicated shampoos to help the situation...and then of course they must be completely rinsed out entirely, as if any shampoo is even remotely left in, the dog will itch itself stupid!

Drying can be done in several ways to get different effects on the coat, and is also an essential tell on what the skin condition is like! Also, if the dog isnt completely dried, skin issues can occur also. And (in my experience), some mobile groomers (not all) dont dry the dog completely, and especially dont do it in an effective way that will help the skin and coat. IMHO.

And nails are a massive tell on the health of a dog...for example...if a dog has slightly longer nails on one foot, that may mean the dog is not putting proper pressure on that leg, which may mean there is something wrong. Also if nails are cracked, this could mean the dog is dehydrated, underweight or other issues.

Do you think mobile groomers are taught all this? bath/dry/nails is not as easy as it seems...

I have used Laurie at Angel Paws before and I highly recomend her. She is very professional and listens to what you want

(unlike another I used that didnt even dry my 16 week old puppies off in the middle of winter before throwing them through my front door - PM me if you would like the name). Angel Paws does have a 4 week wait but I figure its because she does a good job.

I have started doing my dogs myself and would have prefered to use a salon but my male dog gets horribly car sick so a mobile was a good option for us.
