B-Q Posted November 2, 2009 Share Posted November 2, 2009 So I'm a total beginner but I have really wanted a decent DSLR for a couple of years, I finally have some money to play with and have a few big family get togethers coming back I wouldn't mind having it for plus photo's of Buster etc. I've decided I probably want a Nikon D60. I don't want to pay over say about $800 tops. Saw this on Ebay, would you suggest I get it? polomum Posted November 2, 2009 Share Posted November 2, 2009 I'm not sure on prices for the D60 at the moment.....I bought a 2nd hand D80 off ebay about 18 months ago and couldn't be happier although I would love to upgrade to the D300 cos I take alot of fast horsesport pics (polo etc)..Just check with the D60 and maybe others will post on this subject - I think the D60 (or is it the D40??) uses different lenses to most of the other models of Nikon - so maybe worth googling to find out......think that's why I went with the D80 at the time......I actually rang the seller on eBay before i bought and felt really comfortable about the sale etc....Quite a tense week for me until that camera arrived as i remember!!!!!!! U can also google Nikon D60 prices and see what they're going for at the moment as well as there are a few sites that tell you where the cheapest price is at the moment in Australia etc.. kja Posted November 3, 2009 Share Posted November 3, 2009 I can't help with prices but one thing you may want to think about is how well your camera handles noise at higher ISOs. If you are going to be shooting stuff indoors or for evening family get togethers, high ISO shooting is likely going to be on your list. And Nikon's range doesn't come into its own re high ISO shooting until the most recent models of Nikons, which are very very good. The older models, not so much past about 400. Canon led the race in high ISO shooting until very recently and so going with one of the previous models of Canons may give you that little edge. Both Canon and Nikon make great camera bodies and lenses so you can't go too wrong. kja Posted November 6, 2009 Share Posted November 6, 2009 Have a look through some of the recent what to buy threads here - you might have to pop to page two maybe - but there have been quite a few discussions including where people have found good deals and the like. Pretty much any of Canon's line up from the 400D (and the 350D is still good but the 400 and newer are THAT much better) will work - you'll have to look for prices. And pretty much any of Nikon's newer models IF high ISO is important - otherwise, even some of their slightly older models are still good. Both systems have a lot of support. lots of lenses to choose from and lots of room to grow, experiment and have FUN! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I've seen a couple of camera's I might be interested in, display models and stuff but they don't all seem to come with the computer software/USB cables etc. Is this easy to buy seperate? Display models may have been mistreated so just be sure to get a good warranty/return policy - at least 30 days. And if it doesn't come with the disk etc I'd be wanting a very good deal coz there is no reason that a display model shouldn't still have all that stuff. DMA Posted November 7, 2009 Share Posted November 7, 2009 (edited) You know you don't have to buy Canon or Nikon - especially if you're on a budget. Yes they're the best, but you also pay for it. There are two other brands well worth considering. There's Olympus & Pentax. I'm not familiar with Pentax, but their stuff is far from rubbish, whilst I own & frequently use an Olympus E-420. And it does some very good photos under far from ideal circumstances. Below are a couple of pics taken today at the local pound without any editing save for size reduction... I got my Olympus at eBay for under $500 & it was only 6 months old at the time. I've seen Pentax DSLRs for less although they aren't as high on the megapixel rating (ie they're in the 6-8 megapixel region). Another brand worth considering is the Sony Alpha series. For a 12MP DSLR that's not a bad price... I do need to buy a crd though, they only one they had that suited was 16gb and $160, I only want something probably about 4GB but now I can't remember what type he said, can someone tell me?
