kiesha09
I know this isn't a particularly fun topic but my bitch always does a bum scoot after toileting. I've had her checked by the vet and her anal glands are all clear and she doesn't have worms. Is there any other reason you have heard dogs do this for? It's almost as though she does it for cleaning purposes
LDR
It's almost as though she does it for cleaning purposes It's possible, we have the same issue here. He DID have blocked glands at first (rectified with antibiotics, regular emptying and not letting my folks feed their "grand dog" white toast with jam) but now seems to do it because he likes the feeling after a poop. ellz
What kind of dog is it? A couple of things occur to me. Firstly it could be a pain reaction if the dog is constipated or the bowel movements are hurting it's anus. Maybe look at diet. Secondly, if it is a breed with long hair around it's vent, there is the possibility that hair is entering the anus when it closes after elimination and tickling it. Perhaps check and see if you need to trim any stray hairs away from there (CAREFULLY).
WreckitWhippet
Or she could be like one of my bitches who simply likes to rub her bum and fanny on the ground We checked anal glands and swabbed her vagina three times, before we came to the conclusion that it's just one of those things she enjoys doing
schnauzer
Some of the hairy breed bitches can get hair caught in their vulva and this can irritate and make them scoot. Make sure hair is not caught in there. Also if they have a skin crease/fold around the vulva, this needs to be cleaned well as any dirt there can cause irritation as well. kiesha09
Thanks everyone for the replies. She is actually a poodle x so the hair getting caught is a possibility, although she does it even when she is trimmed very short like she is currently. Will have to check it out As for diet she is fed a raw diet and certainly doesn't appear to be constipated. But she has done it for a fair while now (probably about a year) and has had different food over that time eg was fed commercial diet.

Make sure your groomer leaves a small "trail" of hair for urine to drain off. If the groomer clips her too short around her vulva that could also be irritating her.
