bell
My poor stella has a aural hematoma. Around this time of year she always gets bad ears and she has been shaking her head alot and we noticed yesterday one ear flap is very swollen. I am hoping to get her into the vet tomorrow but knowing down here it could not be until tuesday or wednesday. So what can we do to stop further swelling? Wrap her ears? Also what are the vets most likely to do to the ear?
Staff'n'Toller
It really needs to be attended to as soon as possible so tomorrow would be best for her. Generally they open up one side and drain the blood out and remove the clot, then place lots and lots of sutures in the ear flap to try to join the two sides together and prevent a cavity for blood to re-form. Try to stop her shaking her head as much as possible and don't give her any breakfast as they may want to admit her tomorrow.
puggy_puggy
She really needs it drained as soon as possible. They may first try draining it with a syringe and putting her on antibiotics and anti inflams. But if it blows up again they will have to cut it open and surure the two pieces together. Sometimes I believe they use a bit of hard foam that they also stitch onto the ear.

bell
saw the vet today and she is booked in to have an op tomorrow. They are going to fix the hematoma and give her ears a good cleanout. She has been given some pain meds in the mean time so should be feeling better soon.
