Kidney Disease & Fussy Eaters

My 11 & 1/2 year old greyhound has been diagnosed with early stage kidney disease. The vet has said she needs to be managed on a special diet & suggested Hills K/D. There are also plenty of diets on the internet for dogs with kidney disease but Sally is very fussy (has been all her life) & won't eat anything but what I currently feed her although some days she seems to be bothered by nausea because she only takes a mouthful then wants to go out to eat grass.

I know the special diets will help with this but can't convince her to try it as she just gives anything different a sniff then walks away. Has anyone got any suggestions or tried any kidney food that was loved by their dog?

I've actually had a breakthrough with Sally's eating. I've discovered that Royal Canin make presription foods also (I had thought only Hills did) so I brought a bag of the K/D & so far Sally seems to like it but it's only been a couple of days.

My wheaten who had kidney disease was a fussy eater and wouldn't touch the Hills Prescription food. What food does your dog like?

I too would look at what she currently eats & see if you can adapt to something suitable.

I dont now of any dog that eats the Hills special diets .

I am not sure if this is applicable to your breed and my dog doesn't have kidney disease - so not speaking from experience with that, however he is a very fussy eater.

I was given this remedy by canine naturopath ages ago - brew camomile tea (I use organic loose flowers) while still hot add 1 tbs of slippery elm powder slowly - stir it until is goes about the consistency of light gravy - I use about a cup of tea and drink the rest myself .

This creates a lining on the stomach and digestive tract and protects it from things like medications etc - however I have found it really works to get him to eat what I want him to and it seems to stimulate him to eat - so it may make a difference to your dog. My dogs get it every day now and our old boy (10 yrs scoffs it down - guess his system must really be needing some help). As an offside they seem to get more from their food as well - digest it better and get more nutrients from it - which is always something we want.

I can't find any contraindications to kidney disease or your breed but best you check.

Also I am studying canine natropathy & nutrition and it is always recommended that you 'feed like for like' - ie kidney disease feed kidneys (lamb would be the least hard to digest and are pretty readily available) - feed them raw and you may need to slice them up to start as some dogs don't like to eat them first off when they aren't cut up. Also I always feed human grade offal to my dogs - better quality.

Not sure if this will be of any help but good luck with your dog.

Sally continues to do well on the Royal Canin Renal dry food. She seems to enjoy eating it & shows no sign of being sick or eating grass. After all these years I don't expect there won't be the occassional bouts of not eating but I'm really happy so far.

I dont like the Hills diets anyway due to them using Ethoxyquin

Royal Canin contains BHA - which is very similar to Ethoxyquin and has been linked to the same disorders (kidney, liver and immune dysfunction).

However....the levels of ethoxyquin and BHA used in Hills and RC foods are up to 10 times lower than the standards for human food preparations. It would be more dangerous to your dog for commercial foods to not contain these antioxidants.

The Hills Ultra z/d doesn't contain Ethoxyquin. I was curious after showdog posted.

Ingredients:

Water, Hydrolyzed Chicken Liver, Corn Starch, Powdered Cellulose, Soybean Oil, Dicalcium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate, Potassium Citrate, DL-Methionine, Choline Chloride, Iodized Salt, Vitamin E Supplement, Taurine, Ascorbic Acid (source of vitamin C), L-Threonine, Zinc Oxide, Ferrous Sulfate, L-Tryptophan, Beta-Carotene, Thiamine Mononitrate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Niacin, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Biotin, Calcium Iodate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Riboflavin, Sodium Selenite, Folic Acid.

Can't see it in the k/d either:

Brewers Rice, Pork Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Dried Egg Product, Flaxseed, Corn Gluten Meal, Chicken Liver Flavor, Powdered Cellulose, Calcium Carbonate, Dried Beet Pulp, L-Lysine, Potassium Chloride, Potassium Citrate, vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), Choline Chloride, Iodized Salt, Calcium Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, L-Threonine, Taurine, minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), L-Tryptophan, Magnesium Oxide, preserved with Mixed Tocopherols & Citric Acid, Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract.

Which prescription diet foods have it?

It doesnt by the look of it Sheridan - the "mixed tocopherols" are an antioxidant used instead of ethoxyquin.

Can I just point out - too much of ANY antioxidant will cause liver and kidney damage. Vitamin E toxicosis is very well documented. However these foods need an antioxidant otherwise the fat in the kibble will go rancid - much less healthy for your pet than a a small amount of antioxidants.

Sheridan, where did you hear about Hills Z/d Ultra has run out in the US? My girls are on it for a few more months and they absolutely love it. They have a mixture of the dry and canned and they woof it down.

From some wheaten people whose dogs are on it.
