smisch
Sorry Can't really express it in a short easy question... Anyway I have been doing training with Denver pretty much every night for about 5 - 10 min.. it may be as simple as some recalls and leave it commands or just dropping from a stand.. Other nights its his preferred obsession of agility which he has clicked to.. anyway We cannot go back to club training till mid November so I figured I'd start his training so he's not a complete green when we head back to classes.. But my question more relates to the speed at which he is learning.. I started him off with some barless jumps which are now at a 400/500 height and the see-saw in which we played bang games to gain confidence.. (My theory was that next to the weave poles the see-saw is one of the harder obsticals for dogs due to the movement so lets teach it right at the beginning before we can get too confident!!) He now has a solid see-saw but we are still working on coming right down to the bottom and not just putting our two feet in the top of the contact! But now that training of two obsticals has extended to pretty much every other piece of equipment.. I wasn't bothering with the A-frame or dog walk but Denver started showing interest and at several points when they have been near our training area has taken them and done them the wrong way.. So I have started teaching him the correct way to break that habit.. and he has also started basic weaving purely because he watches jock go and then tries to copy.. Keep in mind this a 20 month old BC.. so he has drive.. But my question is am I overloading him.. I'm not forcing him.. we have maybe 2-3 gos of something then play and then go do something else.. or do I just stick to the basics and let him do whatever he wants and teach himself bad habits when clearly he wants to learn.. which is why wen he showed not interest in the a-frame at all I showed no interest in teaching him... Here is a link to a recent vid.. Sorry its a mix with my other boy and my friends little dog and its been edited so there are effects and whatnot.. but it gives you an idea of where he is in his agility training no a-frame or dogwalk because he hadn't started doing them.. he literally started about an hr after this was uploaded after we sent my friends dog over it for some training.. he just ran on up and down.. I have only had him since the end of August.. I'm extremely proud of him and cannot wait to see where he goes.. Any ideas are appreciated!
JulesP
At 20 months old I reckon you can just go for it! If the dog turns and runs away when you come out to do training then you will know that you have over done it.
Vickie
He looks great Sam! Enthusiastic and happy. I would definitely keep training him in agility but would be proofing & fine tuning things as you go along. The danger with doing too many different things too early is that you sequence too much too often & never go back to work on the finer points. His jumping looks good but it looks like you haven't spent much time yet working on his front & rear cross cues. Jumping is just like weaving...it needs to be worked from all angles, he needs to learn to send, call, jump into your space, FC & RC. As I'm sure you know, the equipment is the easy stuff in the bigger picture, it's the getting from one piece of equipment to the next that brings most of us unstuck. You will know if you've done too much if you see ANY drop in his enthusiasm... Little Jock is looking awesome too Edited October 18, 2009 by Vickie

I'm actually atm focusing on just his jumping skills again He has already got some amazing distance that he has taught himself but has no control of where he goes.. he sees a jump and takes it.. So I'm going to start working on it again.. Jock is Jock these days :D If hes out of the crate and i'm training he doesn't give a damn about agility training at home.. as soon as he's in the crate he is insane for agility! so now its crate when Denver has a go... But I mean Jock'll be 10 in April so if he starts to loose his enthusiasm at times I'm not gonna worry..

We are making sure that she doesn't lose that forward momentum but teaching her (and her handler) turn cues has helped enormously while retaining her speed. :D Maybe you'll have to come for a holiday

Maybe you'll have to come for a holiday Well I am buying a car.. So as soon as my hours are done and I have more than a 2 day weekend.. damn traineeships and their required hours I will probably come for a trip down with the monsters.. did a Few back crosses today.. Denver has a far off commitment point on jumps and the See-saw but a close commitment point on EVERYTHING else (but that would be due to the lack of training on everything else..) so I really have to Yell here to call him off cos If not I'm stuffed.. mind you I am working him a lot closer together than novice is but thats because He's got a long wide stride and turns quiet wide.. so we're working with it all.. The forward moment of this dog is all good providing he knows where to go.. which is my own training cos I'm not used to having a border collie who takes off ahead of me like a rocket.. but as U just said as soon as there are turns they tend to start losing it.. It'll be interesting to see what our instructor has to say in a few weeks.. The little brat broke all the weave bases (Really Bad made out recycled PVC pipe sets of 2) so not more weaves but in a few weeks we will have our new metal bases!!! yay.. Everything but the Jumps and the see-saw have gone back into hiding until we perfect what we already know.. then its back to the tunnel and shaping of A-frame... Man my idea on training has changed since I started out with jock.. its scary!!

Maybe train his rears on just one jump first & reward at the upright. This way you won't have to yell "here" as he will be learning the body language you give when you want him to turn. Then when he understands it on 1 jump, move to 2 etc. He should totally understand a rear cross without any verbal before you move on to sequencing with it...same with a front. Everything but the Jumps and the see-saw have gone back into hiding until we perfect what we already know.. then its back to the tunnel and shaping of A-frame... Man my idea on training has changed since I started out with jock.. its scary!! sounds like a great idea ;) . The more retraining you can avoid, the better you & he will be. smisch
Interesting session tonite.. did some see-saw work and a few jumps See- saw he gives a "bang" (contact) on both sides and will do the left from a slight distance.. so apparently I've trained it right! and its the same every time.. he stops in the same position. trying to fix it to be a drop onto the contact just to cover the distance.. Back crosses are looking good as I cross behind I do notice him turn his head to get me within his vision rang so that once hes over the jump he's already of the turn.. I have been teaching him the jump style where they land parallel to the bar which helps this alot! Front crosses are a shambles atm... but we'll get it.. I have forgotten my fronts cos I seem to always be back crossing with jock these days.. retrain myself too! Providing the see saw stays solid will re introduce the tunnel over the weekend but as soon as we slip again the tunnel will go back away.. until we can keep everything consistent! Levi
Hi Sam, Great to see your new boy going so well, can't wait to see him at comps soon . I was wondering where you are getting your metal weave pole base from? I am using pegs in the ground but this is such a hassle that I can't move them very often and Bindi gets used to doing them in the same spot, metal base would be great! Levi
We will be competing at the pairs trial - our first pairs outing should be funny . We are also entering the Gold Coast fundraising trial in December. Bindi also struggles with the heat so the night trials are great. We are competing at the Jimboomba jumping trial this afternoon.
