all that glitters
Went to our local feed store the other weekend where the guy we know quite well works. We mentioned Eagle Pack Holistic and he said oh why pay that price! and took us over to a big stack of big white bags of food, totally plain except for a printed sticker on each that said "Holistic Lamb & Chicken" and then a guaranteed analysis ingredients listing. No brand, and on the bottom it said "Packed for ____" the name of the feed store. It was 22KG for about $75. The ingredients looked pretty good and I was about to buy some but we left it, and went on to another pet supply store where my friend works, and mentioned the food. Another guy working there overheard the convo and said no way BestCare is bad and to avoid their foods, that they used to make foods for greyhounds or something? So for now I've changed her over to Royal Canin. That food sounded good though going by the ingredients, so how could it be so bad, and what would make it 'holistic'? laffi
Anyone can call their food holistic... doesn't really mean much. I can't comment on the quality of BestCare without seeing the ingredients. Just curious though why you switched from EPH to RC? I think EPH is much better (in terms of ingredients)

I can't comment on the quality of BestCare without seeing the ingredients. Just curious though why you switched from EPH to RC? I think EPH is much better (in terms of ingredients) Well the Eagle Pack is getting too hard for me to source and it's becoming annoying, and I have heard of others having their shepherds really going well on the Royal Canin Shepherd one. When comparing their German Shepherd food to the standard Giant Breed food there seems to be less grains in the Shepherd one?? I'm over Eagle Pack being unavailable a lot, I used to get it for cheaper through a friend but she can't get it now, and my local feed store has trouble, so its getting stressful thinking it might not be available when I need it, also I heard a rumor they are phasing out international supply?? Not sure on that though. Anyway I thought Royal Canin was a premium food? I can always change anyway, I will see if her condition and coat etc stay looking great, if not I can change to something else (I was thinking Artemis?) Thanks laffi! Unlucky about the limited availability of EPH. RC is good. My dogs did OK on RC, but nothing special. When I win RC at comps I give it way because I don't think it's that great. I found Artemis much much better. Having said that, see how she goes on it, as every dog is different
stormie
I don't know how true this is, but I confronted our EPH rep about the availability issue last week. We only just decided to stock EPH in our vet clinic recently and initially the rep made no mention of a problem with its availability. When it came time for us to order, though, the supplier said there's been issues. Anyways, when I spoke to the rep, she admitted there was an issue, but that they expected this to be sorted by mid November. Lets hope!!
New Age Outlaw
Another guy working there overheard the convo and said no way BestCare is bad and to avoid their foods, that they used to make foods for greyhounds or something? I'm curious as to why the company having made food for greyhounds would make it bad???
Starkehre
I have had a reasonable amount of experience in amongst the Greyhound racing fraternity. It is the common and popular belief that foods that are produced with feeding Greyhounds in mind is made to a budget as most GH trainers/owners do not wish to spend much money when feeding their hounds. Also, as it is common practice to feed GHs some sort of kibble and add raw meat to it as their most popular form of diet (as far as my experience tells me) the dry food is usually mainly if not completely cereal as they are adding it mean anyway. So, I think that is probably why the guys said it is bad because it is designed for GHs. I thought Pookinuk still had a good range of EP available, delivered anywhere in Melb for $5.00, any amount of bags, same delivery price... along with Artemis, Royale Canin and Nutrience and heaps of other brands. jata
Hi Shelle :p Best care is considered supermarket. Royal Canin is considered a premium food whereas something like Artemis is considered super premium. All you can do is see how Shyla goes on the RC, if your not happy with it then take it back for money back guarantee ;) What suits one may not suit another, I have always fed my persian cats on Royal Canin and swear by it! We sell a hell of a lot of Royal Canin at work and in the 2.5years I have been there, we have only ever had 2 bags brought back compared with other very well known premium foods that get returned to us on a fortnightly basis! Problem is there are so many different opinions on every product it can get confusing I was choosing between Royal C and Artemis for Winnie, I have decided to go with Artemis, if she does not like it then i may try Royal C Its pretty much trial and error, for every one person that says a particular food is good, there will be one that says its crap! Yep that's right I'll just see how she goes, it will either work well for her or not! Artemis is definately another one I would love to try, quite a bit more pricey though, especially the puppy food! I might wait til shes considered 'adult' and them change over cos the adult Artemis is a bit cheaper LOL. Yeah I've heard lots of good things about RC on here, but if I google Royal Canin I see lots of "it's no good" reviews and I think oh gosh, I just bought a bag, now what!! But no I will persevere and see how it goes, it's premium after all!

Yeah reviews can not always be spot on either, you must remember that the pet industry is an extremely competitive world and premium food companies use dirty tactics to slag off their opposition, including posing as members of the general public to slam competitors! You get your genuine opinions on places like this, where people actually own dogs, care about their health and are not paid to say something is good when its not ;)
