FranVT
Took Atlas to the vet today for his suprelorin implant (he was so good, I put him in drop on the table and the vet asked if he needed to be muzzled, I said nah just put some bits of liver chew in front of him so she did that and he snarfed them up, when the HUGE needle went in he sort of put his head up like 'wtf?!' then went back to eating ) and asked her about the baldy patch on his head, it's about the size of a 5c piece maybe a bit bigger and we thought he'd just been rubbing it on something. She had a look with the special light thingy and it was RINGWORM ewwwwwwwwwww! I am so glad neither OH or I has got it, yukko! I said "but we worm him!" and she told me it's actually a fungus which I thought was interesting, it's not a worm at all. Anyway she gave us some fungal cream stuff but I am worried that his hair won't grow back. Has anyone else's dog had this and did the hair grow back properly? I don't really care as long as he is healthy and free of disease but it would be great if the weird baldy patch went away!
~Anne~
His hair will grow back. It is highly contagious to both human and animal so exercise strict hygiene until it clears.
Nekhbet
yup very contageous oh if you have a cat I would get it checked out too as they tend to carry it and not show too many signs like the doggies do
Starkehre
FranCQ, I am really sorry to hear Atlast has ringworm. As PugRS said, it is very contageous. You will need to be hypervigilient with this one. If you have any other pets, be careful. Check them thoroughly. Years ago when myself and my boyfriend (at the time) purchased a cat (from a pet shop ) it contracted ringworm within the incubation period, so it obviously already had it coming on. The stress of a new home etc topped it off nicely. Well both he and I got it also, and it took us months to get rid of it. I can tell you the itching is something you do not want to experience. I also suffer with eczema and have for my entire live, but ringworm itching is even worse. If it remains the one localised spot on Atlas and you do not get it, absolutely fantastic. But if it starts spreading, look out. You may want to do some serious disinfecting of the house etc if it spreads. Try to stay away from kids and avoid touching anyone, until you can be sure it has not spread any further. Super contageous. Hope it is gone soon. Yes, the hair will grow back once the ringworm is gone. And yes it is ridiculous that it is called ringworm. So many people still think it is a worm. FranVT
It's really weird because I thought it was a bald spot I would sometimes poke it and prod it and be like 'wtf is that' and rub his head and stuff, it's been there for MONTHS and I never thought anything of it it didn't look red, itchy and it never seemed to bother him (ie I never saw him rubbing his head on anything etc). Neither OH or I has had it (we are quite hygienic people and would definitely have noticed we are fairly ... free ... with nudity around each other so we would have noticed if we'd caught it. THe vet said that some forms of it are more contagious than others, and some are hardly contagious at all so maybe that is this form? Stil ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww ew ew ewwww ringworm! The vet gave him a thorough checking for other spots of it, definitely none. He doesn't have much contact with kids or other animals, we don't have cats or another dog, but I will make sure he doesn't touch other dogs at dog obedience. Shudderrrrr, ringworm

FranVT
The vet said I should see complete healing in about 3 - 4 weeks but to keep smearing the cream on until I can't even tell where it was anymore. I hope that happens! I am an IDIOT for not getting it checked out sooner, we must have been to the vets like 4 times while it was there! She also said that if it's not clearing as quickly as we'd like there's a wash we can get for him or if we start to see it spreading (would be pretty random if it started spreading now) then to get straight on with the wash. Cavalier
We see some pretty serious ringworm up here in the tropics. If it spreads and becomes generalised (ie all over the body) there are a course of tablets you can give for it as well. Cream is fine if it is just the one spot
FranVT
It's so weird (and lucky) that it's just in the one localised spot because it's been untreated for months (because I'm an IDIOT mostly) so hopefully the cream will clear it up. OSoSwift
Last summer I had some foster kitties that came down covered with ringworm! Myself and my youngest got two each, my eldest and husband didn't, Our aged Stafford got about twenty or more( just wash and cover all the round rings and bald patches with cream!) My Whippet got none! I disinfected everything I could get my hands on with a fungisibe and scrubbed and scrubbed, threw out anything I couldn't and we were all ringworm free a few months out Very very iky! You are not a bad mum and he will be fine
dancinbcs
He doesn't have much contact with kids or other animals, we don't have cats or another dog, but I will make sure he doesn't touch other dogs at dog obedience. Don't take him back to obedience until it is gone. Never take a dog to training or trials if it has anything contagious.
dog geek
Sorry, Franco!!! I am sitting here, remembering my first ever ringworm; my first ever HEADLICE; my first ever scabies.... The first time you come across them it always blows your mind - but don't worry, if you check out the procedure to reduce the chance of the organism spreading and THEN FOLLOW IT UNTIL THE INCUBATION PERIOD has passed, then it will cease to be a problem. Guest Ams
Please don't take your dog ANYWHERE whilst it has ringworm. The fungus spreads by dropping spores. I take a lot of animals from a shelter and treat them. I have a quarantine room. Animals are bathed in Malaseb every 3 days (and the poor things just HATE it and it drys their skin and fur out so I then add aloveen conditioner) and are given Grisoven tablets daily. It takes up to 6 weeks to treat. I've not ever caught one but I think I've absorbed so much of the Malaseb I now toxic myself. I use VirkonS to wash floors and walls. These are done DAILY whilst I have ringworm patients. All bedding is washed on the hottest wash I can get in the machine and then dried in the dryer (just for added heat to kill the nasties). persephone
yep- the ringworm spores fall off in dead skin and hair ... so they will be all thru the house I had a couple once years ago... took ages to clear.
FranVT
Well today I scrubbed the house from top to bottom (was distracting me from worrying about my dad's house burning down) and washed all the couch covers, towels, bedding everything on super hot in the machine as suggested. Considering it's been there for ages and neither me, my partner nor anyone we know (regular visitors, parents-in-law who get him all the time for dogsits) has had it I think we must be lucky enough to have the not-very-contagious strain of it as the vet suggested OR it is something closely resembling ringworm that is not contagious. The vet said that was a possibility too. The spot on his head is clearing up really well and already new hair is coming through looks a thousand times better. Thanks so much for all advice guys. TillyandCC
Hi Ringworm is a nasty thing to get, have had it with our cat before touch wood the dog never got it even though they are best friends. We used selsun gold on the area - rubbed it on and let it dry it worked wonders. hope all goes well for you all - we got told by our vet that we had to quaranitine ourselves for 4-6 weeks until it was all cleared up.
