Miss BeRidgierent
Hey Guys Now I have been thinking about getting Boss onto some Joint Supplements not because he needs it just think it might help him for when he is older. Can anyone recommend anything good? Have been reading some threads and is Joint Guard good for young dogs that dont have any problems its just a precautionary thing? If you start them on supplements at a young age does it help them in the long run? Thanks
Jetty
My vet putted Jet on joint supplements. He had a legiment injury. Anyways he reccommended Joint guard and we haven't had a problem with it. jet was only young. It would of been a few months back now.

Diva
Once they are on the supplements they should stay on them, not necessarily the same product but those same 2 key ingredients. The product I use on my old dog has a warning to that effect but I'm not sure they all do. I have been advised that you can increase the chance of joint problems by supplementing for a few months/years then tiring of it and stopping. I will check the back of the Joint Guard this arvo and let you know about that. Cannot remember the price sorry. I don't have Jet on it anymore. But I did and I was thinking of putting him back on it.

Elfin
I give all my dogs glucosamine/chondroitin and MSM from day one. I used to use Joint Guard, but to get human tablets from the chemist/health food store is much cheaper.
BigDaz
One of my girls has arthritis which she developed at 8 months so we give her Joint Guard. I asked the Vet at the time if it is worth giving our other girl, her sister who has no issues, Joint Guard as well. The Vet said it would not hurt, but there would be no real benefit either. Staranais
My girl (5 months old) gets fish body oil (with vit E) most days a week, as well as chondroitin sulphate once or twice a week. I figure it may or may not help, but it won't hurt. I want to do lots of jumping and hiking with her when she's older, and prevention is better than cure... Red Fox
I use Sachas Blend for the cat who has severe arthritis (about $46 a tub from vet-n-pet direct from memory) and I pop little a bit (probably about half the recommended dose for his weight) in Kei's dinner 3 or 4 times a week. He seems to like it and it can't hurt him. I mentioned it to Kei's breeder a few weeks back and she agreed that it's fantastic stuff and will do him no harm. He also gets Melrose Omega 3 pet oil in his vegie slops and the occasional dose of fish oil and vitamin E
Sankari
I use Joint Guard. My GR has DJD of the right Hip and has also had cruciate injury to both left and right knees. Our vet recommended putting her onto it. I think it's cheapest to buy it from www.greyhoundproductsdirect.com.au ETA Charlotte also gets 3 1000mg Fish oil capsules a day. I have used other brands in the past with Lucy who had HD ED and arthritis from 10 months but none of them seemed to work. With Charlotte i am noticing an improvement in her Hips and has been on it for just over 4 weeks now Edited October 14, 2009 by LucyCharzie
~Archie~
I have started my Golden Retriever puppy on the Joint Guard liver treats as a preventative (paranoid mother!!) I called the company, and they said there is no harm using it as a preventative, just start it at the maintenance dose, it's great for dogs that are known for getting problems.... Archie loves his treats

I am not looking to spend heaps of money on a treatment the he doesn't need as I could find other alternatives if its too expensive.
Sankari
This is the cheapest place I have found Joint Guard so far, next tub we need i'm going to get the largest one. Charlotte gets 1 scoop per day and has been on it 4 weeks now, hardly notice anything gone out of it. It is far better than the others i looked into plus no smell. It is also cost effective as it lasts ages! :p Greyhound Products Direct How much does your dog weigh?

Sankari
Happy to help MBR writing this from the label on the tub i have... Initial Period 4-6 wks 5-10kg 1/2 scoop daily 11-22kg 1 scoop daily 23-44kg 1 1/2 scoops daily over 45 kg 2 scoops daily Maintenance dose 5-10kg 1/4 scoop daily 11-22kg 1/2 scoop daily 23-44kg 1 scoop daily over 45 kg 1/2 scoops daily Because Charlotte was already on cartrophen injections (first injection was the day before) when we started joint guard we could go straight onto maintenance dose which is what we were told. Miss BeRidgierent
over 45 kg 1/2 scoops daily Is that supposed to be 1 1/2 scoop haha? Sorry to be a pain and ask quesitons. But 400g tub how long would that last give 1 1/2 scoop daily?
Sankari
oops um yeah it is supposed to be 1 1/2 Gosh um a 400g tub i'm not sure, i'm still on the first 200g tub for Charlotte. Hardly anything gone out of it I would think a 400 would last at least a few months probably longer. Well if this helps each level scoop is 5 grams.
