Daphne
Hi all, I'm looking for a new vet for my 5yo maltese x, Daphne. I've been recommended vets as much an hour away, and am more than happy to make the drive, but was wondering whether anybody could recommend a great vet in the Templestowe/Warrandyte area or within 40 mins or so. Daphne has some health issues that I'm quite anxious to resolve, so any suggestions will be very much appreciated. Much thanks in advance.

Staff'n'Toller
Hi Daphne, what are the main issues? I work at a clinic in Doncaster, I think our Vets are great, particularly at workups or further referral if needed. Are you unhappy with where you have been going? You may need to PM me. Sam&Saki
Daphe, I live around the same area as you and have given up on the local vets and travel out to the Monash vets on the corner of Dandenong Rd and North Rd. They are great and they are a lot cheaper than those in our area, too x

Cheaper is good also Don't go looking for them there - all you'll find is McDonalds! The clinic has moved to the south side of Dandenong Road between Clayton Road and Huntingdale Road (next to the football oval). IMHO, I wouldn't call them cheap. A standard consultation was $58 about 12 months ago. My guess is that it's around $60 now. They do, however, work long hours (they're there from 8 in the morning to 8 at night) but unless you can make an appointment a week ahead, you'll only see the junior vets after hours. Starkehre
I am not a fan of Monash, and would never go back there. Having said this, my bad experience with them was from a very long time ago, I don't remember the name of the vet I consulted with or even know if he still works there. I arrived with my new Cornish Rex kitten. I knew she had a heart murmur (I had got her very cheaply and she was going to be euthed, I was young, and desperately wanted a Rex and she was the last one available at the time). When the vet listened to it, he laughed, said it was the worst he had ever heard, and told me not to bother vaccinating or desexing as the cat would be dead before it was 6 months old. Well, needless to say, I went to another vet clinic, this time a heart specialist in Cheltenham). He said just to keep an eye on her and that it was a hole in her valve and not her heart, and other than some enlargening over time, there may be no issues. Well, he was right. Hope lived til the age of 18. Lived a long (for a Rex) healthy life. Whenever I took her to the vet after the age of 2 no vets could even pick up her murmur and believed the hole had repaired itself. Like I said, things have no doubt changed immenely at Monash by now. But just thought I should share my experience with them. Several years later, a friend of mine's cat died due to complications after being desexed there also. Don't remember the details, so cannot make a comment on whether or not the vet was at fault. SilverHaze
We've had a few issues there in the past months as well. IMO they have lost the personal touch - nothing is followed through by the same vet - and communication has gone by the wayside. And no - not as cheap as they used to be either. A consultation and some rimdayl tablets cost me $98 They understand breeders - it's a bonus, but it's not enough to keep us there anymore.
luckypup
I also used to go to Monash Vet with my dog, who was getting kennel cough a fair bit, but they would not give me any solutions to the problem, or even suggest a stronger vaccine for it (which i didnt know existed), however, the final straw was when my dog had to get a small warty thing removed from his leg, they stitched it ok (not fantastic but ok), but as it was in a awkward position it opened up a little, so i took him back, and the vet put several staples in the spot without even putting a local anaethetic in there! needless to say my poor dog was NOT impressed, and neither was i!! I changed vet to Brandon Park Vet Clinic (on Ferntree Gully Rd). They are absolutely amazing there! they know what theyre talking about, and they all love the animals that go in there. You can tell theyre not being fake about it too! I try my best to see Claire (one of the vets), as shes absolutely amazing with my dog, always very welcoming, and knows what shes talking about, and gives options for what can happen!! This is something i appreciate alot. Yes, they are slightly more expensive than what Monash are (or used to be when i was there), but IMHO, its worth it to pay slightly more and get the right diagnosis, than be slightly less expensive but having to keep going back! Definitely a vet i will be sticking to for the rest of my animals' lives!
Cosmolo
Bit far away but Dr Michael Righeti at Glen Eira Vet in Ormond is amazing and i love everything about the clinic and staff there. Missymoo
Dr Alison Brown at Wantirna Mall Vet Clinic in Wantirna. Fantastic! Very helpful and clinic is very personal with clients as well, not overly cheap but they really take the time to listen to your needs and help. Our family has been going to Monash Vet for over 20 years now, but unfortunately I sense we only continue going there on a "better the devil you know" basis. It's hard to know what's gone wrong. I guess it's sort of like a family doctor who you've been consulting for years, but suddenly you come to the realisation that they just aren't as quite on-the ball-as they once were. If I can't get an appointment with one particular vet there (Stuart), I'll go to Nick Ashby at East Malvern Veterinary Clinic. He's very sweet with the animals (he'll talk directly to the animals i.e. "aren't you a good boy" which - bizzarely - is something they never do a Monash) and really respects the owners and their opinions/experience. Cosmolo
Funny you should say that Mum to Emma- Michael at Glen Eira always talks to the dogs and cats- puppy dog and puss cat he calls them I wouldn't see a vet that didn't talk to the dogs as particularly with one of my girls, it maks her feel more at ease. This is something i appreciate alot. Agreed! We adopted two of our cats from there (two sisters) and so we have taken our 3 cats there from then on, they are so lovely and warm and friendly and I love the vets, and the nurses are awesome too! I however take Shyla to Boronia Veterinary Clinic, I would never change vets after going there Bigger clinic than most means more vets on, means more time slots available and means more vets to help each other with difficult cases etc, they are always fantastic and friendly. Also open later in the evenings if you need a last minute appointment and prise wise VERY reasonable compared to others
jrm88
Hey Missymoo, yep I have just started there in the last month or so so may not of met you yet!
