Where Do You Buy Lenses?

I've just sold my kit lenses, bittersweet moment.

I'm looking into getting the 50mm 1.8 and maybe a few old manual focus lenses. I don't have a particular 'style' at this time, it's all about learning and getting better. Although looking at the big picture, in two years time I'll be in need of a travel lens, or several small, lightweight lenses to make up a good range. I'll definitely need a wide-angle, for landscapes!

I'll see how manual sits with me, I believe I have the patience! I'm also liking the cost factor of the majority of them.

Anyway, back to the question. Where do you buy your lenses? Especially looking for some places for second-hand.

Thanks,

I just bought my last lens from Cameras Direct and it seems their prices, although already much cheaper than retail shops, fluctuate alot depending on how our $ is going. Since I bought my lens just over 2 weeks ago, the next shipment that came in is more than $80 cheaper again than mine. Not all their lenses are affected so dramatically, if they have stock already in the prices stay the same but if they pay for new stock while our $ is high the savings are passed on.

I will be watching the price of their 50Ds due next week. I might even wait till they're sold and try for some they paid for while our $ is 90cUS.

Here's an example. Watch the price on this one when they actually get the stock in Oct 14th, the price might be reduced further than actually listed there, then again, it could rise, but I suspect if it moves at all, it will be down a little.

I am guessing this one will stay the same until they get new stock. I dont know how this price compares to other sellers.

I love Cameras Direct and use them BUT be aware, they are still gray importers. They say that you get an Aussie warranty but it's not a factory warranty, it goes to their repairer instead (ie- a canon lens with an issue doesn't go to Canon for repair, it goes to a local repair agent that Cameras Direct deal with.) If this isn't an issue for you, then I highly recommend them.

Our last lens purchase was second hand from another photographer - she listed it on Facebook and I happened to see her status update within 3 minutes of her posting that she was selling the lens. Lucky for me because three other people also jumped in to say they wanted it. First in best dressed

Other than that, shop around and don't be scared to play camera stores off against each other. We just bought a Canon 5D Mark II for $400 less than the advertised price because we waged a war between two retailers.
