Agility Dogs
Sorry for the slightly OT post, but I guessed that this would be the best place to get some good ideas on wet weather gear for trialling. After spending the better part of Sunday standing in the pouring rain and cursing my 'wet weather' jacket - the only thing that was wet was ME!! - I've decided to get a really good jacket. My two criteria are that it MUST be TOTALLY WATERPROOF and I have to be able to run quickly around an agility course in it. I'm not concerned about warmth, just keeping dry. MonElite
I use a sking jacket that is not lined. Brand is Marker. Its brilliant, I can stand in pouring rain and it never gets wet. A friend of mine has a simmilar one made by one of the companies that make hiking gear. They are not cheap but mine certainly works.
Seita
rain coat or drizabone?
Agility Dogs
Thanks Guys. ME - That's exactly what I am after. Seita - Thanks, but Drizabone would be too heavy and I want something that will breathe so a rain coat won't really do it for me. BTW - I think I saw you playing at Southside a while back. J...
Something in Goretex or a similar material. I have my old farm Oringi jacket and pants which are totally waterproof and near impossible to kill, but they also don't breathe much either and they are really quite uncomfortable in more humid weather. I bought an unlined jacket in one of the cheaper Goretex versions from Snowgum when they had one of their sales on for about $120. Light, waterproof to 5 m or something and it breathes I haven't given it the complete test of inches of rain in a day kind of rain, but I wouldn't trial in that weather anyway. Meea
+1 on the hiking gear I am in Sydney and haunt the travellers shops around Kent St for their sales - also 2nd hand on Ebay. lightweight, wiking, rainproof - all a good dog walker/trialler needs! Got Spots
I have 2 gortex jackets The older one has gone skiing in blizzards and kept me dry + warm b/c of protecting me from windchill, it has zips in the arm pits that you can open and allow extra ventilation but not get wet. This jacket has also done the overland track in Tasmania twice and other numerous wet bush walks in Tassie. Love it, wouldnt be without it Mountain Designs gortex - unlined If you want I can get the specific design Second coat I got earlier this year, bit lighter than the one above but awesomely waterproof I have been in the Outdoor industry for over 12 years - looking into the best gear GORTEX is the way to go - unlined, and you can add layers under the jacket for warmth if needed but you don't sweat in it Kathmandu during sales or on the sales racks you can pick up the second coat i describe for about $200 and it covers your bum so the water doesn't run down there, very important The hood tucks away and has a nice warm neck thing and a peak on the hat, to stop the rain running down your face PM me if you require further info on the coats or on Gortex in general, or what brands are the best value etc Hope I haven't waffled too much
poodlefan
Yep, Goretex is the go.. I've got a jacket and one of these days I'll get pants too.
Kavik
I have a goretex one but need a new one as it is getting old and zip not working well anymore - maybe for Christmas!
JulesP
I normally get my coats from a horse gear shop. Horseland would be one to look in. Did get a really light coat from Anaconda that has been pretty good, only cost $40 too.
Jigsaw
I have an above the knee length jacket I bought at a boat supply shop. Zipper only starts waist high so you have freedom for your legs. Velcro edges if you don't want to do the zipper up. It does the job, has a hood and keeps the rain out and I can wash muddy paws off it easily. Certainly not glamorous but not expensive!! I might look at a goretex one though next time!
helen
I agree with Gortex, light and comfortable. I have waterproof pants from the golf shop, they are not sweaty like the vinal ones
Nicole...
I bought a Rainbird spray jacket from the camping store at christmas and it has saved me many times. It's great because it's so light weight that it wraps up small and can just sit in my agility gear so I never forget it. Also good as it has lots of ventilation so you don't get sweaty in it in summertime, but you can wear it over a jumper in winter so suits all seasons. Has never leaked even in a massive thunderstorm! luvsdogs
This is just the thread I needed to see. At trial time, July, it almost always rains & I'm always scrambling for something to keep the rain out. Gortex sounds wonderful. Do all the camping, boat, horse stores sell jackets made of it? jr_inoz
I have a gortex jacket (short one) brand - "mont" I absolutely love it! Very light weight, not noisy, incredible comfortable. not the cheapest thing - but worth the money. This is a link to my jacket - but there are others as well. http://www.mont.com.au/index/catalog/product/0172 bought it from outdoor store "annapurna" here in adelaide. I also own a longer, thigh length coat. Brand name "line7". Not gortex, but 100% waterproof. Really really comfortable. Is a yachting coat. Love this one too - but is lined (thinly) so a bit warmer. This one kept me dry whilst walking in pouring rain at Fox Glacier in New Zealand. The bad news is - whilst I was looking for a link for you - this company has gone out of business but you may find some at yachting and sailing stores still. Yachting gear often much cheaper than goretex products.
Mym
Tony, Timberland at DFO out at Brisbane Airport has a great sale on Gortex wet weather jackets, and my husband, Mark got a raincoat (not gortex) for $70 today. Well worth the visit. Poor man is contracting in Sydney for 8 weeks and freezing his tail off! Edited October 11, 2009 by Mym
Agility Dogs
I bit the bullet on Saturday and bought a gortex jacket.......then got the chance to test it yesterday. Liking it a lot - not too hot, and totally dry!! Quite pricey, but I'm planning on keeping it for quite a while.
