Jigsaw
I have some eyedrops I use occasionally for my Paxy to dilate her pupils (for night training). I'm getting some more in a few weeks but the ones I have expired over 12 mths ago I've realised since speaking to the opthamologist (haven't used them for a while!!). I was told I could still use them but I didn't realise they were quite that old. They are in small sterile single use vials. Drops are Minims Phenylephrine Hydrochloride 2.5%. I don't have to use them right at this moment and certainly won't risk her sight as we already have problems there, so I can wait for the new ones. But it was something I was just wondering about whether they were still usable or not.
Nekhbet
i wouldnt be putting anything in the dogs eyes that is that far out of date some general creams, yeah had them sitting for a while but meds, no.
Bellatrix
Just like with any medication or drug, anything expired will not deliver optimum results. I personally wouldnt risk it. The sterility of the vial would have worn off too so probably best not to use it.
Jigsaw
Thanks for replying Nekhbet and Bellatrix. I know there are some things you can use past their useby date but it just didn't sit well with me to use these drops when they were so far out. You know when you know the right answer but you just want someone else to back you up?! This was one of those!! If they caused any irritation or harm I would have a hard time forgiving myself. We'll just keep barking at shadows for the moment!!
Rysup
Years ago one of my dogs got a serious eye injury and had to be treated at the Emergency Vets. They sent me home much poorer and with a load of creams and drops, and later I realised they were ALL out of date. I used them, but I also got a refund for them!! Cavalier
My girl is on eye drops for life - the bottle has last me 5 years now. Its now 2 years out of date and still works just fine with no side effects. The worst thing that can happen is they dont work
Kharn
My girl is on eye drops for life - the bottle has last me 5 years now. Its now 2 years out of date and still works just fine with no side effects. The worst thing that can happen is they dont work Thats not entirely true (bolded bit). It would depend on what the ingrediants are. Companies have to do shelf life studies in relation to preservative efficacy (multidose) and in relation to chemical/physical stability when determining the shelf life of a product. If ingrediants breakdown over time or if its multidose and the preservative is no longer effective, using these products could result in more then just not working.
