MsBex
Hi, Just wondering if anyone has experience/can recommend a good puppy obedience class in the Gold Coast. Finish the puppy pre-school (4 week course run by the vet) in a week, and wanted to take the next step. I have a 14wk old Cocker Spaniel, so not sure what time you start the next stage, but better to be prepared I think Thanks in advance.
Nicole...
Hi MsBex - I also have a cocker spaniel and asked exactly the same question on here about 2 years ago when we finished our puppy preschool. I attend 2 training schools still as we are actively involved in agility. Saturday mornings there is International Dog Obedience Training School - held at Benowa State School. We have attended there since Lomani was 14 weeks old and it has a great friendly environment. Only uses positive training methods and has a lot of very experienced instructors plus an animal behaviourist to help you out. Monday and Wednesday evenings there is the Gold Coast Dog Obedience Training Club - held at Alicia St Southport. This is an ANKC registered club and also only uses positive training methods. GCDOTC website There are other classes on the coast, some good, some very questionable... ask around here for feedback on them and go and get a feel for any of them before you sign up. Feel free to PM me if you have any particular questions or want contact details for International. Oh and it's definitely a good time to go straight into more training... these cockers can be little ratbags if you let them get away with it! Lab lady
I recommend Gold coast dog obedience club as well. There are lots of very experienced trainers who are very keen to help. They get a big from me.
MsBex
Oh and it's definitely a good time to go straight into more training... these cockers can be little ratbags if you let them get away with it! That's totally the reason I want to continue the learning!! He earned time-out (3 mins each time) about 5 times tonight!! I don't think my son even made that many time-outs!! Thanks for the tips, will definately go and check them both out. Am thinking of agility down the track, but really want to get the obedience aspect sorted first! Nicole...
Yes obedience is a must to get the foundations right for agility. Cockers seem to really enjoy the satisfaction of doing some form of training anyway. I know when Lomani was going through those ratbag stages I would have so much trouble if we didn't do any mental work, but just 10 minutes of training with her was enough to wear her brain out and then she wouldn't be destructive. I'm always at International on Saturdays and GCDOTC on Monday nights so if you go to either, feel free to drop over and say hi. I'm always where the agility is and the only one there with a gold cocker
Jetty
If you are closer to the north side of the gold coast, I took Jet to puppy preschool at yatala's vip pet foods. They were good.
MrsD
If you are closer to the north side of the gold coast, I took Jet to puppy preschool at yatala's vip pet foods. They were good. I was going to suggest VIP if you are on the northern end of the Gold Coast too, I train there & they are great .
