For Those Who's Dog Has Had Nasal Cancer

Recommended Posts

Hi. Lucy's nose started bleeding for the first time today at about 12 o'clock. It hasn't stopped. It slows a bit, then she sneezes a big clot and sprays blood then it drips again.

I have had to put her in a puppy pen to contain the mess. I don't want her to spend the last of her life contained and lacking the attention and love she normally gets, but everytime I have patted her today she has sprayed me with blood.

Once the nose bleeds start, do they only get worse, or iis it a good day/bad day type thing?

She is still active and happy, she had a ball at the beach this afternoon, but if she seems droopy or is still bleeding tommorrow I will take her to the vet.

Thanks Staff'n'Toller. It seems settled this morning, but gosh, she needs a good bath.

I will speak with the vet today. It is my understanding the anti-inflam she is on also acts as a blood thinner, plus she had low clotting factor even before she started on the drug. I missed giving it to her last night just in case it was making it worse.

Will see what the vet thinks.

My dog had a different type of cancer so I can't help you wiht this. I suggest you join http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/CanineC...?yguid=69740366 if you haven't already. You will be able to talk to many people who have had experience with nasal cancers. I know of several dogs with nasal cancers who have gone on to lead quality lives for much longer than the vets ever thought they would. Best wishes and healing thoughts to you and Lucy.

You have to stop the sneezing, it's the only way to slow and stop the bleeding.

My boy used to sneeze out huge blood clots and I always had to wash walls when he was done.

He was really focused on me, so I used to lay with him and every time he went to sneeze I'd say "nah-uh". I'd hold his muzzle sometimes and just pat him in a way that relaxed him. The calmer he got, the less he'd sneeze.

He used to sneeze A LOT when he was excited, but over time he would start to sneeze and then look at me - I'd say "nah-uh, no sneezing" and he'd try and stop it.

Can't say your dog will be the same, my boy was very responsive to me. I had him swallowing on command (as he'd reverse sneeze too and that's the sure fire way to stop it) so it was just in his nature to pick up on what I needed him to do.

If you need more support send me a PM and I can give you my number.

My bitch had both her carotid arteries tied off to stem the blood flow to her nose. She was haemorrhaging and would have died if we didn't do it. her PCV (packed cells) dropped from 44 to 17 in 3 days, her gums were white I was so scared.

That was in April this year and she has been fine (perfectly fine even! no blood or issues) since then.

MRI showed erosion of septum and possible lesion at back of nose and x2 biopsies showed no cancer so we still dont know what it is. (she also had pyo 2 days after the surgery :) and had to be spayed)

Apparently tying off one or both carotids is a fairly 'benign' procedure according to the specialist surgeon (of course that was not reflected in the bill :( ).

I suggest if your girl isnt too frail and/or old you speak to your vet about tying off her carotids. My girl recovered really quickly and we are so happy to still have her.

Let us know how you go L x
