poodlefan
How old is puppy? I left my pup with friends for the first month, then he had access outside through a dog door. Don't worry about the bonding - that will come. You need to spend time with a pup to bond. If you want to help it along, book in for some obedience training. mish13
I am not sure if you want to spend the money but when my dogs were young I sent them to doggy day care. They were picked up in the morning and dropped back in the afternoon. My dogs loved playing with all the other dogs and came home and slept like logs they were so tied. Gayle.
The puppy will be fine on it's own. It will probably sleep most of the time, just leave some safe toys in case it wants to play for a bit. We all work or go to school in this house and our dogs were quite OK being left in the backyard during the day. They had shelter, water and toys, then lots of attention when we were home. When we got Dusty, I took a couple of weeks off to settle her in and she just slept the whole time. I needn't have bothered. Puppies aren't human babies, they don't need constant attendance and they are perfectly able to put themselves into bed and off to sleep, they are capable of getting themselves a drink and if you leave adequate toilet facilities (newspaper) they are also able to find that and use it. corvus
Kivi was in a pen in the backyard and we paid a dog walker to come around and feed and play with him during the day for the first 5 or 6 months. For Erik, my working arrangements are more flexible. I work from home often and when I go into the office I do a half day and come home at lunch time. He is currently inside in a pen when I go to the office and he toilets on newspaper. He tries damn hard to hold it until I get back, poor mite. I would put him in the yard, but Kivi hates the yard when I'm not there and would bark all day, and Erik would freak out if he was out there without Kivi. Our neighbours don't like our dogs barking, which is fair enough, so they stay inside when we are out where they are quiet.
Bjelkier
My OH was home for the first 3 weeks we had Alchemy at home and then she was left in a modified puppy crate and play pen inside as the weather was too much for a little pup, even a Samoyed. Since then she has been outside in the kennels with the other dogs, shes fine. I work for 8 or 9 hours a day (not counting travel time and I do live a long way from were I work), no hassles here Alchemy loves going over the the kennels. Seita
I've never had a problem with puppies and settling them in despite the fact that I work and with my older girl I was working part time studying full time. I set up a safe pen or run outside and pop pup in there with bones/toys games etc. It usually takes a couple of sessions of being in there for a short time (while you're home to ensure pup is ok) and after that puppy learns very quickly that outside is fun! See the other thread in here on getting a puppy used his pen for suggestions. I brought a pup home earlier this year and set up a pen (half the backyard actually) for him where he could be safely contained while I was out. He had toys, bones, a sandpit etc to keep him amused and my older girl was next to him in the other half of the yard for company too. I didn't want the pup to run with the other dog as he was too small and the older dog was too rough and this worked really well. Pup needs to learn how to be alone as you can't always be there and as long as you make it fun for puppy and give them enough personal time and training when you are home, they won't usually start any nasty behaviours! If you can get home at lunch or get someone around to feed puppy in the middle of the day that is helpful, but I see that you only work till 3 so you can feed puppy in the morning before work, leave puppy with a treat ball or a bone etc during the day, feed again when you get home and then last feed at night sometime (depending on how often you feed puppy at this stage). corvus
FYI, most doggy daycares don't take pups under 16 weeks. I think that's pretty fair. Apart from the fact that dog daycares are like human daycare and there's often something going around (Kivi picked up a mild case of kennel cough), daycare is also pretty full on for a wee little puppy. You want to make sure your pup is the kind that will love lots of other dogs.

It's normal for a pup to be a bit off their food for the first few days while they are settling in. Don't stress, she will eat when she is hungry. I wouldn't be leaving food out - give her 15 min to eat and then take the rest away. Also it is a tendency of new worried puppy owners to keep offering new and more exciting foods when their up doesn't eat - don't be tempted to do this, just stick with what the breeder recommended - otherwise you will create a fussy puppy. Tassie
You could try just giving her a chicken wing (or the Chi x equivalent) as you're leaving, so that the play pen becomes a special place to be. Have you worked out how to fix the pen so she can't get out? Make the chew treat something really nice she doesn't get any other time. I wouldn't leave other food in there - give her breakfast early, so that she has time to toilet outside with you afterwards, before she goes into the pen. It won't hurt her to wait till afternoon tea time for her lunch, especially if she's had the wing or neck or whatever. If you were going to leave 'normal' food, I'd put it in a treat ball or something so she has to work for it.
