Snap
The 35mm f/1.8 is worth looking at from what I hear
redangel
I am still learning about lens...I understand the fstop ratings, but what can I expect re:glass. I know there is ed glass, G glass etc... all my lens are vr af. To get these in low fstop is $$$. I often man focus...so should I jump to a mf lens or wait for a splash of $$$ for af lens??? rugerfly
hmmm not sure what you mean, the 1.8 is auto focus, they are under 200 dollars for the nikon. It will match your d90 perfectly and will teach you all about DOF. 1.8 is fast enough and great in low light too, ie indoors.
rubiton
Freezing mtion is all about high shutter speeds - 1/1000th will freeze motion and any lens will do that (though the bigger the lens the more light you need but most normal lenses 1/1000th at F8 freezes things like FA18s, cars and horses just fine
redangel
Ruger, I wasnt sure if the cheap lens supported af. Remember I am so a beginner! Rubiton I have attached an example of an action shot I took, on af/sport. I am very critical of focus, though I like this shot (grass flying off heels) For the rest there were some hit n miss. I see the shots done of playing dogs and want to know how they are achieved, they seem so clear. When originally shopping for camera-all the reps were pushing the cont.shot sports feature of canons. Am I restricted as a nikon owner/ or is there a technique I need to grasp? My only knowledge extends to panning/ predicting where the action will go. rugerfly
mmmm in no way are you at a disadvantage with a d90. Sports mode is just a cheating feature on a Canon. Your D90 has a continuous high dial also. use a higher shutter speed than 1/400 and put it on cont high (ch) You will need a good deal of light or bump up the ISO to get more shutter speed. Using auto on your camera will get you varied results with movement. You need a fairly fast focusing lens also.
rubiton
ISO 400 Shutter Speed 1/1000th and Aperture of F8 stand with your back to the sun so its lights up the dog. Pan with dog and keep the auto focus points on dog and you will freeze frame dog. Cant help with auto features as they will jump around a bit with speed and aperture settings as it tries to read the entire image.
Pennyroyal
For portraits the Nikkor 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 if you can afford it are great lenses. http://www.nikon.com.au/products.php?categoryid=25 You can set your camera to capture multiple frames a second to make sure you get the image you want Have you had a look at the tutorials on the Nikon site? http://www.nikondigitutor.com/eng/d90/index.shtml Edited September 27, 2009 by Pennyroyal
