Guest Baylord
If i do have to make that call today,i just hope everyone understands, and he will have at least one night with some affection shown to him. Centitout I know it is difficult and sad, but you did the right thing. Like Beauie, we too have had unprovoked attack happen on my OH where the girl (from over East, and not of Beauies or my lines) came for a mating, unprovoked, she ran out and flew at the OH's neck, and actually broke skin, not once, but twice. Needless to say the mating never happened, and the owner was advised to take her back asap, the owner then put it back on me to have her pts. It wasnt pleasant but had to be done. We cant afford any aggression in the breed, whether it be brought on by owner's ignorance (which normally is the case) or breeding. From the sounds of it he would have taken a long time to recuperate, and it wouldnt have been fair on you, your other dogs, and most importantly your children. Hunterhound
So sorry that you needed to make the call Centitout....but I am positive it was the right one!! It is just so sad that this poor boy must have suffered for some time...at least now he is free of pain.... I certainly admire your willingness to assist these hounds in need.... I just wish it wasn't something that needed to be done
centitout
Sad thing was, there was bloke wanting to take him apparently-he has one of my girls on co-ownership(i still have her papers though) bu t "disappeared" 18 mths ago and i think thats where the litter that was advertised last year around that way has come from This boy was undesexed-gee i wonder why he wanted him,but after speaking to the pound keeper,he said he would refuse to send the dog to him. PM me if you want his name,so he doesnt try the same thing. Courtesy of the pound keeper,i now have this*&%$holes phone number-he actually had a friend that is a member here. So that is why any future pet girls will be desexed prior to leaving-yes i know the cons of early desexing, but even when i offer full price of desexing back, some still think they can make more by breeding. And mine arent the only ones i have heard of unfortunately over the years. MsKatie
It is such a sad story - and seeing the pups from Vic on this unregistered breeders site made me very sad. As a new bloodhound owner I am just learning about the breed but my respect for those of you who breed is immense - I love the fact I can look at Earls pedigree and talk to Centitout about the dogs in it - that knowledge is so valuable and I feel much more confident with Earl knowing I have her backup. Beauie
I have just come back from the vets, and sadly the decision was made to send Spanner over the bridge.happy trailing Spanner You did the right thing Centitout. Such a shame it turned out this way but he is in a much better place now. As Id said before, pity you & onsntillnflash had to go to all that trouble/expence picking him up etc when the ranger could/SHOULD have assessed the dog properly. Re breeding, sadly I think the only real way of one not having their lines/stock being bred from by BYB's is to spey early, before leaving the breeder. Something many of us are not keen on due to the surveys but better that really, than knowing a pup from you helped produce many a "Spanner".. Think we have all been caught out by what we thought were genuine puppy people, even after checking them out thorougly, however things can still happen change for the worst. Sadly, BYB's will always be there, someone will always sell a pup with $$ in mind....at least one can sleep better at night if they desex their pets, knowing that its not from any of their breeding. Good luck folks

Good luck folks yes, I think we all strive to do the best we can and try to believe that people are honest...but you are correct Beauie in saying that some people appear genuine (and maybe initially they were) but the mighty $$ creeps in & before you know it a litter in produced by a BYBer. This doesn't just happen in the dog world, as I know!! I know centitout has been proactive with offering the fee back for spaying/neutering but even then you can't trust people will do the right thing. It certainly is food for thought regarding the desexing of limited register pups prior to leaving the breeder. The RSPCA do it with their youngster/pups/kittens prior to leaving (once they have reached a certain age - can't remember exactly what that is?) and it is a great preventative for 'mistake' litters! centitout
It does have drawbacks though for large/giant breeds-there are several threads on it,but at the moment they outweight the risks, and after seeing that dog ,well,it is something that will be done. i dont know how people can sell a dog and not care what happens to it-my last litter i have just had 5 people desex theres-ALL in the same week with more being done soon.I tried offering a rebate of $100,wasnt enough, offer to pay full cost and that seems to have done the trick! farlap bloodhounds
Just got back from mudgee where i picked up the boy from scone. He had a good go when i went to pick up his lead, and managed to get a finger ,he has severe generalised demodex mange and associated bacterial staph infection over entire body .Ear canals are completely blocked on one side, both heavy yeast infections. His legs are so bad with demodex they are bald and extremely wrinkled-looks like elephant skin.Extremely poor hind end, hips will be getting x rayed tomorrow, but at this stage looks to be advanced arthritis/HD. He is ok with other dogs, but showed aggression with other people-so at this stage his future is doubtful, medical issues aside, the aggression is what is worrying. Will let everyone know tomorrow after he gets the complete vet check up.He would have been a stunning dog, full blanket black, and even bigger than the big liver/tan boy i had-obviously has some good bloodlines somewhere,as most of the "purebred" bloodhounds i have seen from that way are skinny, cross types.I just dont know how people can treat them like this thats terrible. Any microchip? Surely there are so few litters in Ausralia that you should be easlily work out who the breeder is by his age etc? and return him safely. Beauie
thats terrible. Any microchip? Surely there are so few litters in Ausralia that you should be easlily work out who the breeder is by his age etc? and return him safely. The breeder is in Victoria, they did not want him back nor offered any help towards him. Here in Oz, Farlap, we have very few good registered breeders that health check, show etc. Sadly there are some BYB's (backyard breeders) who have got hold of a dog & bitch & then just bred them, selling pups to whoever wants them....$$$ on their mind. If you read Centitiout's last post, she was discussing the best way of stopping this from a breeders point of view by speying very early or refunding the vets spey fee at a latter time when the pup is older (6mths+ etc). Sadly, even if someone just wants a pet, I think the only way to really "guarantee" your pups/lines are not a part of some BYB's production plan, is to spey at 10-12 weeks old, before they leave your property... YES, extremely young & early and has its downfalls, BUT really the only guarantee. The refundable vet spey fee does work well with the "honest people" but for the one's whom plan to have litters, they know they can make the $$$ back when they breed their litters. Bloodhounds are NOT the only breed that have this BYB problem here, my own breed is also one that is regarded as "hunting hounds" and thus are wanted by hunter's to be bred either together or mixed with their other hunting dogs. centitout
Unfortunately, there are a lot of unregistered bloodhounds,a lady that i turned away because she "didnt care about the papers, she just wanted a bitch to breed " got quite "irritated" with me and said she couldnt see the big deal as there was a lady down there who was quite happy to sell her a bitch,no questions asked WITH PAPERS if she paid the extra $500 She apparently has 6 bitches. She refused to give me the name of the breeder though, and i know there is a vet down there that breeds unregistered hounds regularly. I have discussed this with my vets(they are the ones who put spanner down) and they will desex any future pups for me at 12 weeks. It is not recommended at all for large breeds(early desexing) bu t it is the only way to safeguard the dog. I dont know how anyone can breed a litter, with all the associated heartache and effort that goes in ,to just ship them off at 8 weeks and never want to hear how they are .I got the nicest surprise when the owner of one i sent to NZ 3 years ago rang me the other week and thanked me for sending Chance to them, they told me what shes like, cant keep her out of the pool, loves his grandkids and now i keep in contact via facebook,as do a few of my other previous puppy owners. Unfortunately though, todays economics mean it is the majority who now think of their pets as a way to make extra money. Here are some of my guys -this is what all bloodhounds deserve to be treated like

Ashweenz
Hey my name is Ashleigh I'm a veterinary nurse in a specialist clinic in nz. A few years ago I adopted a beautiful bloodhound cross from the SPCA. This lead to my interest in the breed. I would love to eventually get a purebred bloodhound however I have trouble finding anyone one that owns, let alone breeds bloodhounds in nz. I would love to know if there are any breeders on this forum that send pups to nz or anyone that has contacts in nz that breed bloodhounds. Thanks

simone07
Hi there, not sure if this question has been asked before so forgive me if it has but I couldn't see anything about it I am wondering if bloodhounds would work well on sheep farms to help farmers catch foxes? does anyone have any experience, info, opinions about this? thanks!
