Ashanali
what brand lenses will fit my nikon d40? i remember someone who is a photographer telling me that canon and nikon lenses are interchangeable (she used my 55-200 on her canon camera) but not sure what else will fit. they are only interchangable with a lens adaptor - otherwise, canon only fits on canon and nikon only fits on nikon. You can buy generic brands like Sigma or Tamron that are cheaper than genuine Nikon but still do a decent job.
carebear
weird she didn't have an adapter on hers. we went to the eco park and she only took 1 lens, and she took my lens off my camera and stuck it on hers... nothing else was added. no idea how she managed that. kja
Yup, you'll need to stick with Nikon or one of the third party brands: Tamron, Sigma, Tokina and make sure you get the Nikon mount. Third party makers do some awesome lenses. They also do some very very good lenses that will help keep your budget in tact while still giving you nice glass to work with. kja
No, third party lenses are built in either Canon or Nikon or Sony or Pentax mounts. When you order them, you simply make sure to order the one that says Nikon. There are no extra bits to order or fuss with - they are ready to go out of the box. But you don't want to order the wrong one and end up with a Pentax mount for your Nikon Look here - the first on the list says "Nikon", the next one "canon", then "olympus" ... just read the whole description before clicking the Buy button. Seven
Should add that Nikon d40 has a builtin motor in the lens for focusing unlike some other nikons where the motor is in the body and this means it must be a HSM type lens and most camera shops should no this, but some dont know their products either. Best way is if you can test on the camera first and you should be able to remove yourself easy. There is a black button on body near lens you push in and clockwise unclick your lens, if unsure get a shop to show you.
carebear
so because the motor is in the lens, and not the body, does that mean i can't use lenses that don't have a motor, or i can use them but i have to do something differently? sorry i'm a complete newbie to this eta, i forgot to say thanks heaps for that list of lenses Edited September 21, 2009 by carebear

carebear
focus manually lol i think my pics would come out blurry. i need glasses for distance, and don't think my prescription is totally correct... shall stick to the ones with an af motor  lol
