I don't think I'm of much help either. I know very little about it and have no personal experience with insulinoma.

I know it's a tumour of the pancreas and these tumours release a high level of insulin which will cause low blood sugar. A complete blood test will usually reveal this to be the case.

I think it can be medically treated with Prednisone. I believe the tumour can be surgically removed depending on the opinion of the surgeon after xray and further investigations.

If I were you I would ask to be referred to a vet specialist centre for an evaluation and assessment. They will be able to explain the condition to you and suggest treatment.

Sorry Bubbette, really don't know much about the disease either. All I am familiar with and as suggested beforehand as well as giving your pet four to six small high protein, fat and complex carbohydrates and low in sugar meals per day. If not able to be controlled by the diet, then sometimes cortisone tablets help. Hopefully your vet would be able to advise you on all this information.

Surgery can also help, but this needs to be discussed with your vet. What your poor wee dog has is very uncommon, it is seen mostly in cats.

cheers for now

I've never been in this forum before (but regularly check the health forum) so have only just seen this. Not only do I have personal experience but I can direct you to a very helpful email list called [email protected]. I'm still on it despite losing my boy on 11 June, and there are also quite a few of us who have lost dogs who stick around to help where we can. Please join the list and then you'll have access to articles and links etc, plus the knowledge of members. We've found that most of our vets aren't that knowledgeable about this "rare" disease so we're all just educating ourselves really.

If your dog has been diagnosed with insulinoma, it is NOT necessarily a death sentence.
