OSoSwift
It has been a little while since I trialled in Novice(well trialled full stop really) and when I did we trialled under the "old" rules. In novice now you can have a retrieve of the dumbell on the flat or a change of position. I know what the change of position was in UD, but all I can find in the new rules is that there is one. What I would like to know is.. Is it always the same - ie drop from a stand for example, or one change from a position you choose to a position you choose? Sorry if it is in the new rules somewhere and I haven't seen it.
RubyStar
COP in Novice is always the same - drop from a stand, then return to your dog.
Erny
When does dumb bell retrieve become mandatory (ie what level)?

OSoSwift
Thanks Rubystar. I thought that may have been the case. I think that I will train for that and leave the dumbell for Open
RubyStar
Thanks Rubystar.I thought that may have been the case. I think that I will train for that and leave the dumbell for Open That's what I'm doing. A lot of people are of the opinion you can lose more points in the dumbell than in the COP, and I can see why! So give you and your dog the best chance of losing less points
mollipop
Just be careful if your dog has an "independant streak". He could anticipate and go down in the "stand for exam".
Tassie
Description of the Novice COP is on p. 26 of the rules - you can get them here on the ANKC site. And what mollipop said - be sure you proof both stands.
JulesP
Funny Poppy has anticipated the change of position but has never gone down in the SFE. I do use stay for the SFE and wait for the change of position though. The person that ran me through the ring on the weekend was saying that the judges had been talking about doing the change of position across the ring because of this problem. JulesP .... would you mind explaining what you mean by this? Where is it normally done? COP is done perpendicular to the normal starting post and to where the stand for exam is done. So far, that's been what I've been offered in the ring. I still have a keen, smarty pants though so I have to heavily reinforce the stand
Erny
COP is done perpendicular to the normal starting post and to where the stand for exam is done. Aaaahh, I get you .... so they've been conducting the SFE at the same spot the COP is done at. Thanks for that TSD.
Ptolomy
In WA most of the COP are done between the figure 8 posts. But I know not all states actually use posts/polls for the figure 8.
ness
Not having competed in Novice but in SA the Open COP is done from the start peg and the few novice mock trials I have done its been from the start peg.

Exactly - now they actually have a white marker on the ground (not related to the start post) and ask you to simply set your dog up (in a stand) in preparation perpendicular to the position at the start post. Confused the hell out of me initially ;)
ness
Actually it just occurred to me we had a Victorian Judge over to judge at the Royal and yes we did the open COP exercise across the ring.
Seita
In Qld they do the COP straight out from the start peg the same as the SFE. I have had a few judges do it across the ring instead but most have done it in the same spot as the SFE in all levels.
Ptolomy
. I had a recall that went in an arc shape to avoid the land mine in her direct line at the Western Classic! :D She's a silly thing, hates going near "weird" things on the ground. Like last week, refused to heel over a different coloured patch of grass
