How Long Does A Dog In Season "bleed" For?

Hi All,

I rescued the poor Chi x with Cherry eyes from Blacktown Pound yesterday.

She is such a lovely dog, I took her straight to the vet and due to her eyes being badly infected the vet wants to put off desexing and eye surgery until her infection clears up, about 2 weeks. There was no sign of her season yesterday.

Overnight little Cherry came into season.. all in my bed I must add. lol

Ive have NO experience with dogs in season, Ive googled but all I can find is that she will be in season for around 3 weeks. Will she bleed for 3 weeks??

Can she be desexed while in season?

She will be completely secure during this time so there is no chances of her getting out or a male getting to her but I really dont want her bleeding in bed...

Thanks

Jo

They usually bleed for three weeks.

You can purchase bitch pants that you can put cut up sanitaty pads in that you change at least once daily. Big pet produce stores stock them or there is a company that advertises on DOL that makes them. Bitch Undies

Yes desexing can be done whilst a bitch is in season but it's a little harder to do as the tissues are all swollen so therefore harder to cut and stitch etc. Speak to your vet about this. The rescues on heat that I have had we have waited a few weeks after they have finished to desex. But I have no entired males, very secure fencing and the bitch did not leave the house whilst on heat.

And yes it's a bit of a shock to the system when your first rescue comes to you on heat. I have delt with several now and have got the taking on and off of the undies when they go in and outside down pat. :)

Thankyou for your responses. I just went to Pet Barn and got her a pair of undies, she doesnt mind them on which is a releif.

I have never expected to deal with a dog in season as my pets are all desexed at 6 months. Now I am in rescue I guess i can expect to see a great deal more than this :o

I will take her back to the vet in 2 weeks as instructed and will discuss it all then.

Thanks Again
