oakway
Hi, Bitches in whelp need to be on a complete diet not puppy food. Yes years ago we didn't have the variety of food we have now so we fed puppy food because it was a darn sight better than anything else. Now days what with the money that is spent by dog food manufactures to ensure a complete and nutritious diet for our dogs. Puppy food is manufactured for puppies not expectant mothers. So a more complete and nutritious diet should be fed. Now having said that I feed chicken and dry food. It works for me. Chicken as = minced frames, frames, neck and wings. I feed the dry in the morning and the wet at night.

Missymoo
Interesting Oak, Ive always fed Andvance Puppy Growth (which says is good for gestating and lactating bitches as well) food dry to my bitches in whelp (plus bones, chicken necks etc...) what is the sort of Dry food that you are feeding with your extras? I am always open to good suggestions in the best interests of mum and pups. Ive only just mated this bitch so thats why I was interested in what others feed Thanks for replies Edited September 12, 2009 by Missymoo
oakway
Strange that you ask as I have just changed brands of dry food. Over the years I have been breeding I have used many brands of dry food From the super premium to just the average brand of dry food. The last litter that I bred the bitch was on chicken and CopRice Family Dog. I have changed because the Formula has been changed and it just wasn't doing the job. I have just changed to Uncle Abners and all the dogs weight has increased. I also have baby puppies on it and they are doing so well. This was taken at about 8 weeks and his weight has increased and I have had cut the dry back a bit.
Cazstaff
I used Advance Puppy as the base of Ziggy's diet. Adding cooked chicken thigh fillets and rice with pumpkin & spinach, Vets all Natural Health Booster and rotating the regular additions of sardines, eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt ect. I fed her 4 to 5 meals a day of as much as she's eat. I also gave her Biolac to drink twice a day with Calcium Sandoz added.. I worked hard on her nutrition as she had been a street stray who only came to me (as rescue under DOC)5 days before delivering 7 pups. I presumed she was starting behind the 8 ball as her pregnancy nutrition would have mainly been scraps she found on the street . My idea was that the better I could get mums health/condition the easier the whole event would be for her and in turn...for me  On the above diet she delivered 7 small but healthy pups that grew like crazy and she managed to feed them all very successfully and even gain some weight herself. At 4-5 weeks I weaned the pups onto Advance puppy and they all thrived. It was an expensive exercise at the time but a healthy litter of pups and and mum was worth every cent. Caz.. oakway
Yes please, keep your thoughts coming in. This is a very interesting thread. Of course everyone will believe that what they feed is correct, but please remember each dog is different and may require something a little different as may some breeds, but the important thing is good nutrition no matter what brand you feed. pesh
Your correct there Oakway to each there own, but never would use Coprice on my dogs, just not the right stuff for our gang. Advance puppy for bitches in whelp, especially from week 5-6. With chicken, beef, eggs or seafoods as others have suggested. Variety the spice of life. lol
