Another Dandruff Post

Moose has been shedding quite a bit lately so I sat him down with a slicker brush today and gave him a good groom. Managed to get rid of quite a few loose hairs but it also seemed to stir up some dandruff. I didn't notice this prior to the brushing. Is dandruff a normal part of the shedding process?

I read somewhere that a 50/50 mix of apple cider vinegar and water used as a rinse can be helpful. Has anyone used this?

Also, is there something I can add to his food to keep his skin healthy? At the moment he gets Dr B's BARF patties mixed with some Vets All Natural Health Booster, chicken necks and all natural treats.

Cider vinegar is great as a finishing rinse instead of conditioner & leaves no residue in the coat, so is ideal for dandruff. 50/50 dilution is far too concentrated. I use cider vinegar myself as a final hair rinse & 2-3 tablespoons per litre is ample. There is no need to rinse it out but make sure the rinse doesn't get in the dog's eyes as it stings like hell!

A teaspoon of oil in the diet, or

Sardine, tuna etc in oil, just home brand nothing flash. In summer make it sardine or tuna in springwater, dogs can react to the oil and heat and effect the skin. But your still giving oil in the seafood, just not over doing it. 1/2 a tin twice a week.

I don't know about over in WA, but over here in NSW were having good pollen counts which many dogs are reacting to. No real winter, so pollen is really hanging around.

Or, washing a dog too often can trigger drandruff skin. Once a month is ideal.

Or, poor quality dry food.

Or, wheat, wheat product can also create a problem.

There you go, just incase you didn't have enough to do. lol
