shantiah
I have worked for myself for many years both in a salon and mobile but have received an offer to work full time for someone else. I have previously worked for this person on a part time basis and the conditions are much better than mobile, not to mention the lack of travel. They have asked me "what would it cost to get you here full time" Of course having been self employed I have no idea what the going rate is for groomers and am wondering if anyone out there would like to give me an idea. I know most people dont like to disclose how much they earn so PM is fine. Thanks heaps
shmoo
$20 an hour seems an average wage.
Dogsfevr
Im not sure what the current wage is but are you a specialist of any breed or specific style. ie hand stripping(not carding) etc etc. That may allow for better negations
poodlefan
Aim high! Open the bidding at $35 per hour. If you have scissoring skills or clipping skills, negotiate your way around the hack washing and drying work that anyone can do.. that way they'll get more bang for their bucks. No way a fully fledged groomer would get that much in Syd!
megan_
I am not a groomer and know nothing about it but....I would ask for a per dog rate, rather than hourly. That way you are rewarded for grooming more dogs per day - both you and your employer win! Of course, if you get a severely matted dog you might be on the losing end of the deal, but it should even out (or you can negotiate $x per small and medium, $Y for large and/or complicated). jerojath
I have never worked for a wage, but used to groom for a percentage of the charge for the dog. This varied between 40%-70%! On 50%/60% there is no reason why you can't take home a grand a week.

Cavalier
Most nurses/groomers get paid more than junior vets. However 35 per hour is more than senior vets as well.

jerojath
I think most people would earn more than vets! Why is there a common misconception that vets are rolling in dough? Most vets I know (especially juniors) do it pretty hard!

Yes, people forget how much medical supplies and medical equipment actually cost when you have to pay for it all yourself, and therefore get shocked when they are presented with a bill for these things, and assume that most of it must be going to the vet themselves. Most people would probably be surprised how little of the money they pay at the clinic actually ends up in the pocket of the vet who attended their animal. It's an OK salary, but not a great financial return when you consider the time and money you need to invest in order to train as a vet.

becks
If you have taken a wage from your own business, that should give you a guideling of what you can earn as a groomer and a starting point to negotiate - also keeping in mind your own living expenses. (wonder if we pay better vet wages over here as there are a lot of aussie vets, unless they are just touring the world and working as they go?)
