Can You Use A Check Chain On A Coated Showdog?

 Share

So it appears all our work came undone today in Toby's effort to get to the judging table to play with the judge

The judge suggested we may like to try reverse handling and made us have a go at it and another lady suggested maybe a fine check show chain as he is hitting six months this week and just getting a huge pull on him too.

Ultimately I know I have to work with him very reg to get him to settle in the ring. I have been a bit reluctant to coreect him tooo much as he just loves it and I want him to be happy. I have been told by a judge not to correct him yet as he was sooo happy on the table. Unfortunately though our run is up in baby puppy though and we are now playing with the big boys, my baby is growing up yet showing no signs of maturity :happydance2:

So can I use a check chain in the ring on a coated dog without hurting his coat?? He is a six month old Havanese. And what kind?

Thankyou

Bec

I tried a regular check chain on my boy (he's a Jap Spitz) and found that it became tangled in his coat. I've since tried a chrome snake chain and have been happy with the results. He goes well on it and it doesn't tangle or get caught in his coat.

You can get them here:

I just brought stuff from them and are wonderful to deal with.

The snake chains are gorgeous, I plan to get one for Leo, but am going to wait until he is big because they are too expensive to be buying monthly!

Don't be in a rush for him to grow up, he maybe up with the big boys now, but he is still a puppy and should still be allowed to enjoy it. there is nothing worse then seeing little show robots in classes for young dogs.

Becks - I am very concious of that. He thinks the judge is the lastest diog toy and pulls like anything to get to them. I am happy for him to love the table and judge and so far the judges have made nice coments re his temperament and joy. I would love him to walk better though, When out on his daily walk he walks like a dream and in obedience too :D so I know he can do it

The best he has ever done was when tabled first before his triangle. Once kisses were done he was happy to walk :banghead::provoke: Now we hit minor can I coax him alomg with a toy to walk instead of pull? I need a sqeeky rat too lol he liked the look of other peoples just need to find them.

A very fine check chain will be quite ok, but I wouldn't necessarily go to one just yet.

Don't worry about him being a little bit naughty, whether he's in the "big league" or not. My 11 month old American Cocker is still only just getting his act together. Sometimes he'll move beautifully and be a dickhead on the stack, other times he'll move like a camel and stand until the cows come home, but he NEVER fails to greet the judge with a kiss and sometimes it really doesn't matter that he isn't docked, because you can't see his tail anyway because it is wagging so fast! :banghead:

Let him be a baby, until he's in full coat and "truly" competitive, he's really only going to be competing against other puppies anyway.

The chain may make no difference.

Still allow him to be a baby BUT i would be inclined to start addressing the pulling towards the judge because its a habit & until you start to break it it wont get better & if its pulling the movement goes with it.

You just simply need to be more interesting at this stage .the judges are fun so you just need to be more fun.

More a case of teaching him he still gets both but there is a time & a place
