Walking On The Lead

Hi All,

We have a Shar Pei, called Suki, nearly 7 months old now. We have been to some puppy training classes with her and she got on ok, she seems to be so excited about whats going on around her that she doesn't listen to her instructions. When we get her home she is fine though, she knows to sit, stand, drop, we have no problems with toilet training.

But the big problem is trying to walk with her on a lead. We have taken her off of the standard lead as she was nearly choking herself by pulling so much. We then tried a Halti nose collar which actually worked in regards to her being more under control but the only problem is when we do pull her slightly the collar makes the loose skin around her nose push up into her eye which then makes in uncomfortable for her to see.

Can anyone offer any helpfull hints on how to help walk on a chest harness?

Thanks

why dont you join a weekly dog obedience or arrange a session with Mark Singer

you need to learn to get her to listen instead of cycling through difference equipment. It could be an overall lifestyle problem more then just the leash  Harnesses etc do not SOLVE the problem they simply offer an option to decrease the amount of pulling. What you can inadvertantly do is desensitise your dog - I have seen dogs on 20 different walking aids and nothing works anymore. They pull against them all as they think thats what they have been trained to do.
