woodbyne Posted September 1, 2009 Share Posted September 1, 2009 Hi, My bitch is in season and a few of you might remember i posted about her allergy to chicken and a few other issues. I have decided not to breed and have her desexed. I asked the vet when is the best time to desex her after shes in season. She said it doesn't matter but she prefers not to do them when they are in season which is fine i'd rather her finish first then desex. My question is is there a best time afterwards to desex her hormone wise? i was a bit upset about not being able to breed her as i did buy her as a show dog and the breeder knew i wanted to breed but i think its in everyones best interests to desex her.... puggy_puggy Posted September 1, 2009 Share Posted September 1, 2009 I think you are a fantastic breeder choosing not to breed with a dog that has allergies and other issues. The rescue bitches that I have had here that have been on heat we have waited untill two to three weeks untill they had finished to desex. I think it's more a case of making sure the swelling, that being on heat causes to the tissues, resolves then anything else. I would think that in your bitches case you don't have a set timeline so I would wait a four weeks or so after she finishes her season and then desex. My vet also advised me not to breed and is so kind as to desex her at cost price not htat the cost had anything to do with it. I would be horrified if i sold puppies to people and they had issues i just wish breeders could all be honest and i guess thats why this breeding thing isn't for me.... Yes, I wish the breeder of one of my terriers had been honest with me about the fathers significant allergy problems. atua Posted September 2, 2009 Share Posted September 2, 2009 Ive always been under the impression 21 days after being on season is the best time to desex as the hormones are at a level balance again. One of my old bitches used to come on heat every 5 months I guess it really depends on how often she comes in. I have heard of bitches coming on every 12 months as well. Hence why I was told to desex 21 days after they come off season. A huge :D from me to for your decision not to breed. woodbyne Posted September 3, 2009 Author Share Posted September 3, 2009 Hi, It has been a hard decision but i couldn't honestly sell puppies knowing they potentially might get allergies. The thing that disappoints me is DOGS NSW. As i thought i would before i did anything i applied for the prefix paid the money it was all approved now i wont be using it as she is my only bitch i asked if the prefix can be put on hold but i have to continually pay the same fee to hold a prefix as someone who is breeding puppies all year round. I explained my reason for not breeding and said i was trying to be responsible they couldn't give a dam so looks like i will forfit my prefix name i'm not paying $70 per year or whatever the fee is for the next 6 years as thats how long till i would be able to have another dog.
