Finally Got Some Answers

We finally have answers to Boris's nerotic behaviour, blood results have confirmed he has this condition, so now he will be on Oroxine for the rest of his life, I am really hoping it starts making him feel better soon.

Has anyone else had this ??, the vet is confident we should start seeing a change in him very soon.

So now we have a ritual in the mornings, Misty has her 3 heart meds & Boris his thyriod, & then again at night time.

I am pleased we have some answers but also sad that he is now on meds forever.

Thank god I work for a vets, couldn't afford not too at the moment

I had a Kelpie/BC bitch who was eventually diagnosed as hypothyroid at about age 3. No blood tests in those days, and her only symptom was severe hair loss. Anyway, she was put on Oroxine (that was how they diagnosed her - it was - if the Oroxine improves her, then she's hypothyroid :cool: ).

Thankfully, we saw improvement within 2 weeks - then it was just a matter of fiddling around to find the dose that worked for her. In her case, it was a fairly high dose, as she was a dog that seemed to need to operate at the higher end of the normal range. Vet was happy to work with the dose that saw her with no symptoms.

Jess was on meds from then on for the rest of her happy, active life - old age finally saw her go to the bridge at 15 and a half - never had any problem related to the Oroxine.

You may not see a change for about 2 weeks - that's the lead time for this sort of medication, but hoefully it will work as well for your Boris as it did for my Jess.

I have hypothyroidism myself and the difference I felt after going on meds was like comparing night and day. I hope your pooch is back to his normal self really soon.

Panda was diagnosed with hypothyroidism just over a year ago, he is on thyroxine, 1/2 tablet twice a day. It took a little while to sort the dosage level.

He was overweight, lethargic, had a brownish tinge to his skin and hair loss. He had been to a dermatologist who diagnosed follicular dysplasia and didn't test his thyroid.

He is a completely different dog now.

Pele is hypothyroid. I suspected that something was "not quite right" when she didn't snap out of her porkiness and lethargy after being in season just before she turned 2. I took her to the vet and insisted on a full blood test including thyroid and the results came back low thyroid. The vet was amazed! My previous Bull Terrier was diagnosed as hypothyroid when she was 5 years old, and the vets didn't pick it up then It was only thru my research on the internet.

Hypothyroidism is very common in dogs and there are many symptoms. I'm amazed that many vets don't think to test for it.

Boris should start to feel his old happy self in a couple of weeks. He'll probably need a few blood tests to "tweak" the medication, then after that blood tests twice a year to keep a check on things
