Norskgra
One of our dogs woke up with a red eye. His pupil appears to be fine but it is red around the pupil. There is no sign of any injury. Our vets aren't open today. Does anyone have any suggestions on what we could try until we can get to the vets tomorrow morning?
Elfin
How old is he? I am assuming he is an Elkhound? The white part of the eye when you lift the upper eyelid, is it red? Is his pupil responsive to light? When you say the redness is "around his pupil", is it the iris (the coloured part) that has gone red? Any cloudiness on the front of the eye? Any discharge? Jaxx'sBuddy
what i do as it can't harm is a saline bath for the eye. that way if there is any foreign body in there it will come out. also saline is soothing and should reduce the redness if it is topical. i would do this then take to vet tomorrow if it is still red. He is a 6 month old Elkhound. We washed his eye out and it is now just the skin around the eye that is red and a bit puffy. His eye is responsive and doesn't seem to have sustained any injury at all. There is not any cloudiness and doesn't appear to be any discharge. I will give it a go with saline as well. Elfin
Sounds good... try cold tea instead of saline. When you said it was red around the pupil I was worried about uveitis.
Norskgra
Thanks Elfin. I will go and make up some tea and let it cool. He liked having his eye flushed.

InspectorRex
Yep I 2nd the cold tea option. The natural Tanine in the tea is very soothing for eyes and has natural healing properties. If no better by tomorrow have the Vet check it as sometimes they can get grit etc in the eye which can then scratch the cornea and the eye then becomes infalmmed
oakway
Nothing like good old cold tea for a sore red eye. Works wonders with people to. Cheers.
Norskgra
I have made the tea and I am just waiting for it to cool. I had to make a cuup for my daughter because she thought I was offering to make her one when she saw the tea.
Norskgra
We have only applied the cold tea once and his eye is almost back to normal. Thank you everyone.
