:ange:
Can anyone explain to me why Ruby's teeth chatter sometimes. She gets seasonal 'eye boogers' and when she wipes them off with her paws and (blergh) eats them she sometimes chatters her teeth. Is it a happiness thing?? Apologies if noone knows what the heck I'm talking about.. My dog has tendencies to be weird.
sas
Dante does the teeth chatter, he does it when he's either super excited or his having an aniexty moment. Many dogs love the feeling of eye rubs so it may just be her reaction to something that feels really nice or she's satisifed the eye itch.
Dog_Horse_Girl
Greyhounds are known teeth chatterers! Lilly chatters when something is especially wonderful...usually rubbing her own face or when she feels very special after zoomies or a back rub (she lies on the sofa rubbing her own back!). espinay2
This action is referred to as the 'flemen' response. It helps them process a combination of smell and taste with the Jacobsons Organ which is located on the roof of their mouth.
sas
I'm not sure how scent detection is relevant in the above given senerios?
Elfin
My boy chatters his teeth and dribbles when he sniffs female dog's wee. And then he sticks his tongue in it and chatters some more. He is a dirty old man.

Greytmate
Cool. this thing has a proper name, 'flemen' response. I always called it "eating the smell".
