luffy4688
My puppy Bailey has pus coming out from his genital. He's 8 weeks old. On both occasions it happened after he urintated. He accidentally swallowed a cigarette butt yesterday evening and was taken to the vet. Pus was greenish yellow .The vet managed to get him to vomit it out and he was given some charcoal to neutralised the toxins from the cigarette. Could the pus be linked to that? Or could it be a urinary tract infection? Should I bring him to a vet? If so, could it wait till tomorrow? He still seems to be behaving like normal. Thank you all in advance. When a friend's rotty had what looked like pus coming out of his penis I think the vet told my friends that was normal, but don't quote me. I am sure someone will have be able to confirm. poodlefan
Is he desexed? Nope, he is not desexed yet. Planning to, but not yet. It could be pus or it could be smegma which is perfectly normal for male dogs. Only a vet can tell you which is which.
Sandra777
This sort of discharge is not abnormal in male pups, it's not pus but natural secretions (no not semen) which vary from dog to dog and from day to day. No reason to panic but next time you're at the vet, mention it and the vet can check that all is well, but it's virtually guaranteed he'll be fine and normal. luffy4688
Thanks for the responses. I feel much better knowing it shouldn't be serious. I'll definitely keep in mind to bring it up to the vet when he goes in for his 2nd vaccination.
_PL_
do a google search on dog smegma. he may not have learned to clean himself. Any obvious sign of infection though and he'll need to go straight to the vet. He can have a little not a lot and 'greenish yellow' is worth a check with the vet. persephone
It is probably normal..., but often puppies get infections- localised ones. Male adult dogs do as well.. it is called balanitis. You can't hurt by gently bathing his sheath with warm salty water night & morning... this will clean it If it gets worse..by all means take him to the vet!! ellz
Could be a very common condition called balanitis which is an inflammation of the head of the penis. Quite easy to treat but may need antibiotics or a topical cream if it doesn't clear up quickly. You could try flushing gently with saline to see if that helps. Often the dog licking it will do one of two things, clear it up or make it worse.
puggy_puggy
It's not likely to be a UTI. I would clean the area with some salty water daily and make sure it is dry. If it continues then get a vet to look at it. Have a chat to your breeder about it as well.
Erny
Is very possible that it is normal discharge. Using a tissue well dampened with Coloidal Silver (available from Health Food Stores and/or Pharmacies), gently wipe around and slightly inside the sheath to clear the discharge away. Once a day should do it. But as has been mentioned, if it persists, consult with your Vet. ETA: I'm thinking that using salted water could be a bit too drying for such a sensitive area - and one that is meant to be moist and lubricated. Thanks for all the advices. Just gave him a wipe with some salty warm water. Will look for the Coloidal Silver tomorrow. It's my 1st pup so i'm freaking out at every little thing. Haha. :p

The coloidal silver is good for many ailments, so it is worth keeping in the medicine cupboard Edited August 19, 2009 by Erny

Referring to what Powerlegs said, if he have not learned to clean himself from his mum, now that he's already seperated from his mum, is he still going to learn? Fairly normal but if the discharge is a funny colour or smells odd then straight off to the vet. I got a bit panicky too, especially as the first vet I saw told me it was a grass seed and she needed to do exploritary surgery asap :p . Needless to say we got a second opinion and no grass seed! We tried 2 types of antibiotics (which did nothing) and were told to wash with a solution of diluted Betadine twice a day (helped a little but I ended up changing to saline instead which was milder). After about a month of this and no improvement we took him to his breeders vet who did a swab test which showed nothing. The advice was to just leave him and it would clear up on it's own which it did. Most male dogs will have some form of discharge so it's completely normal. Puppies just aren't very good at cleaning themselves up yet

I agree, my girl had a yeast infection and although different I was advised by my vet not to clean the area with salt water as it is a very sensitive area and this could irritate it further.
