dezzyno.1 Posted February 12, 2012 Share Posted February 12, 2012 just thought I would post and say yes we have at last started tracking training for this season....Tamika and Jessie just jumped straight back into it and Jessie tracked like she had not had a break and we look forward to Tamika and Jessie gaining their first tracking title at the first trial....Dezzy did a good track last week but this week he decided to sight the article and then decided he would hunt and air scent...lol...I will need more practice with Dezzy but I am sure he will get back into the swing of things....I also have a new dog tracking and her name is Pink and she is also an Amstaff...Jessie is her aunty.....she has done 2 tracks and done them perfectly she is really getting to know what to do and cannot wait to get to the treat at the end of the track....hopefully we go out to Haddon soon but I don't think so with the weather so up and down so we are at Vic Park practicing which is an entirely different setting but it is still terrific to finally get out there and start tracking after our break...looking foward to this season very much :D Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

So neat to watch Elsie working, loving it and doing something so natural! Got to track with one of the experienced dogs on a 45min old track to see how it looks, very fun experience. Obviously the pup won't be able to even socialise for the first 5-6 weeks until last vacc but I think the earlier you can start with training the better, so as well as starting some basic obedience, I'll play some tracking games with him and see how I go. Just ordered a book suggested on here so hopefully I'll be able read through that before picking up the pup, and have half an idea what I'm doing. I'm not in Perth, but I hear TrackWest is a great club, one of my dogs siblings is over your way and they go tracking with that club. Tracking is heaps of fun and its never too early to start a puppy- I used to make my puppy do small tracks for his dinner a couple of times a week and he loved it. I would say I found it very hard to learn how to read a dogs tracking behaviour from a book (I am in remote NT and no one else tracked here when I started), its much easier when someone experienced can tell you if your dogs faffing around or really tracking, but the theory certainly helps you work out what you need to start off with. I expect we'll be down to the minuses soon!! I need something with decent grip but still be able to remain sensitive to the leash (and be able to handle food rewards). kathq Posted May 7, 2012 Share Posted May 7, 2012 I use leather dressage gloves, give good grip, strong enough to handle the rough stuff but sensitive enough to feel the lead. Jigsaw Posted May 7, 2012 Share Posted May 7, 2012 We had our first go at tracking on Saturday. My girl just absolutely loved it! I could barely get her nose off the ground from the moment we got out of the car, although not an unusual feat for her. :laugh: . We did three tracks with my scent and then another track with an unknown, as she was doing so well, and she worked it beautifully. Even when she went off track a bit she got herself back on track without too much fuss. dezzyno.1 Posted May 14, 2012 Share Posted May 14, 2012 Just to let everyone know that myself and Dezzy passed our test 3 at the Knox trial on the weekend....unfortunately Jessie and Tamika did not pass but will get some practice in and have another go at the next trial...it just wasn't their day....we had beautiful food and went out to tea that Knox kindly put on for us all....was an excellent day and I am so proud of Dezzy obtaining his Tracking Dog Title ....also thanks to Knox who put on a fantastic weekend for us all Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
