Anti Social Dog Training

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have a German Shepherd (17 months old) who has been going to anti social training on and off for the past 10 months. Unfortunately it isn't helping and I am looking for something new. The place I have been going to was recommended by my vet and is run my an animal behaviourist.

Does anyone know of any training in Perth, WA that might be able to assist with this?

Missmoo.. it's basically a setting which has x amount of dogs that all have problems socialising. The one that I go too at the moment have angry dogs everywhere - In front, next to you, behind, etc. I think this puts him more on edge so am looking for one that is a bit leaner.

You basically walk around in big circles, so the dogs pass each other and train them to not jump/bark/growl/other bad things.

that technique can work but IMO it works much better when you have other dogs that are well socialised, confident and self controlled to help with the process...if all dogs are on edge it makes for a melting pot rerady to explode IMO...

anyway look for a obedience training club that will take dogs with issues...you may have to hunt around...sorry I dont live over your way so i dont know of anyone buti'm sure someone will come along to help

good luck

do you live near either of the GSD clubs ? do you live near canine at all ?

Both the GSD clubs will help you, if the times don't suit then give me a pm and I will help you to get a place to go.

Have you been going to Garth or Kathy ?

I sent you a pm and my phone number.

Hi Rusky,

Have replied to your PM. I have been seeing Garth, down Armadale way and Joondalup. I haven't been for a few months admittedly, but that's because I feel that the area is too hostile. All the dogs there are aggressive and I don't think that is a good way at getting him to feel safe with other dogs.. especially when they want to bite each others head off.

Thanks for your help

Missmoo - Thanks for your help as well. I completely agree with you which is why I'm looking into other avenues now. I'm going to need a shoulder replacement before I hit 30 otherwise

sunnyy, I don't think your dog's issues will be helped with this type of class and by the sounds of it, there doesn't seem to be any structure or control where you are currently going.

i don't live in WA so I am unable to help you locate another school/trainer but I will say this...be sure to suss out where you intend to go and ask lots of questions about their techniques and methods as well as experience with aggression.

Dog aggression (I'm gathering this is what your dog has) needs to be worked calmly and progressively. Avoid physical correction based methods where possible until the dog has learned alternative behaviours to the ones he is currently showing. If possible, look for a place that has a balanced approach and is able to provide you with a good structured program with lots of guidance.

Good luck!

no they definitely won't help, unfortunately Garth is out on his own where dog training is concerned.

Hi Sunnyy,

I currently go to Reactive Rovers class in Dianella with Kathy Koepeliss (hope I got the spelling right). Dogs have been helping with the filing lately, but I'm sure I can find her contact number if you like.

She's been awesome for Duke, and he's been a big help with providing opportunities for the others in ignoring suddenly barking dogs. As far as I can tell, everyone pretty much enjoys it, too. (so does Duke, he sulks if we can't attend). No reason why you couldn't come one weekend and see what you think (with Kathy's permission, of course).

Go and see Kathy Koppellis-McLeod. She is definitely your best bet when it comes to aggression is Perth. She is NDTF qualified but uses positive methods and runs reactive rover classes- the dogs in the class are all reactive in some way but the atmosphere is calm and controlled. I observed these classes a few years ago and it was very good.
