Worst things:

-Looking after the coat and dealing with sheds.

-The moments of spitz independence that come just when you least expect them and really don't want them to. Kivi blew off his recall for the first time in months one day in favour of eating human excrement.

-I think the friendliness gets a little out of hand sometimes. Kivi WILL approach a dog that's going to snap at him, and he'll then do it again if it was only an air snap. It takes an all out lunge accompanied with vicious barking and snarling to convince Kivi that it might be better to stay away from a dog. I can call Kivi back from a dog he wants to say hello to if I don't think it will appreciate him, but I have to watch him especially with smaller dogs. He sometimes bounces all around them and when they have a go at him he doesn't even feel it through his coat. He will also totally whore himself out to anyone that has a kind look for him. You sometimes feel like you aren't very special to him.

Best things:

-They are just so freaking sweet! Forget the typical sweet breeds, Lappies take sweetness to new levels. I've had Kivi for nearly two years and I still marvel at his temperament. He's just gorgeous through and through.

-Kivi is very easy to live with and has just slotted himself neatly into our lives. He doesn't give us any trouble. We can take him anywhere and he will behave wonderfully for us. We barely trained him or socialised him, but you wouldn't know it.

-Lappie cuddles! They are just the right size and consistency for cuddles, and they usually smell like the last shampoo you washed them with. Kivi groans when you spoon with him. You just have to experience that to know how lovely it is. :) Who wouldn't want to give this teddy bear a squeeze?

I'm amazed how similar the Lappie is to a Belgian .. though the difference being slimline body/face, isn't best friends with just any human right away, which makes her a great guard dog.

But a massive snuggle pot!! Mmm spooning a dog.

Sorry a little OT but I'm nearly a spitz owner :p

Ok.

1. Lappies usually have no sense of when its not ok to say hello to another dog. Even when that dog is ready to eat them, lappies tend to think they are just playing hard to get.

2. Unless you start early with recall, they can take their own sweet time getting back to you. And even if you think they are reliable, they can still take their time getting back to you. Especially if there is something more interesting on the way.

3. They are a spitz, and can be stubborn at times. You have to be more stubborn then them.

4. They are very, very smart, and will work out how to get you to do what they want, when they want, very qucikly. Worse still, you won't even know about it!

On the other hand-

5. They are simply the most personable, gorgeous and clever dogs I know. They want to be with you, and have your love and adoration - and you will get the same tenfold in return. They are fun, they enjoy life to the fullest, and they simply make you feel great whenever you are around them.

And finally - they are far too clever for their own good!

All you Lappie people need to stop....you're in just about every thread showing off your perfect dogs   Now I want one too!!

Well, ofcourse you do!

Seriously, has anyone noticed that this thread is in the top 5 for regular hits?? Not bad, esp when lappies are still becoming known. However, popularlity is a double edged sword....

Wow that is all really great, awesome answers guys thanks so much!

I got an email this morning from Melissa of Watersedge saying, and I quote, that it is a "distinct possibility" that there will be a bitch available for me in this litter! I've done some calculations and I even think I might be able to save the money + some extra for stuff, because it's not just the puppy I have to pay for obviously it's a bunch of other important stufff that I can't even think of right now because I'm so excited! Ridiculous! OH has made a rather generous donation, he is such a sweetheart, it's more than we usually spend on each other at Christmas (though this year his mum and I are buying him an iPhone).

I want more pics!

Due to concerns regarding the warming weather here in Victoria, the Finnish Lapphund Club of Victoria has just announced that the Brighton Beach Lappy Picnic to be held on the 5th of December has been cancelled.

Details of the next lappy picnic are on the Finnish Lapphund Club Website.
