For Those Who Use No Pull Harnesses

I'm very interested in the different ways people use no pull harnesses and also what type of no pull harness you prefer.

How do you choose to use your no pull harness-

As a simple restraint while luring the dog, ie not actioning the harness at all?

To apply pressure until the dog stops pulling or guide the dog back to the walking position you're after?

To give an on/ off tug before there is tension on the harness?

Other?

What no pull harness/ harnesses do you prefer?

The only harness I have used for an extended period was the sporn harness. I'm glad I borrowed it, because it was wasted on Sarabi. I believe its supposed to make it uncomfortable to pull as it puts pressure on the front of shoulders.

The dog club I used did put another harness on her, but again it didn't work (it was one that the lead clips at the front of the chest). I believe they are supposed to work by controlling where the dog goes/faces.

I know that some people have had success, but they are not for me and I did team them with other training eg focus and heel type work.

I use it for guiding, I wouldn't say that I give 'pops' on the harness as such. The dogs seem to naturally find their boundaries with it but as with anything I have seen Labs etc. still bounding around and pulling into them if their handlers aren't attentive enough. I have also seen smooth coated dogs houdini out of them even when fitted as tightly as possible.

In the Cert IV Comp Animal Services course Jenny Ireland from SA holds a session where she shows us her version which is practically the same as the gentle leader harness but made of cotton webbing, and shows her version of the double ended lead that you use as stop/go and left/right pressure indicators for the dog.

Halti Harness

The only problem with the Halti Harness is that they need one size smaller than their small size for the mini dogs. ;)

Jenny is an obedience judge and since the Delta course is restructured she may do regular visits to Vic so you might be able to catch up with her about her design. Best Behaviour Dog Training was a big user of them but she is off on maternity leave AFAIK. :)

I'd rate the Halti Harness easier than the Gentle Leader Easy Walk because there is only one clip and a snap hook that goes at the chest.

The Gentle Leader- particularly the purple one, the belly strap is only a slightly different shade and sometimes that is even hard for me to see. :)

At any rate - there's always you tube!!!

Is that the Harmony Harness?

I use the Sporn Pack Control Leader.

I don't use it as a corrective device, more as a management device - ie, I don't jerk on it or whatever, it's simply that when Saki is wearing it that she pulls much less.

I still use normal corrections - if she does jerk / pull the lead / attempt to pull me in a different direction or at a faster speed, I just stop completely. She then has to circle me and return to the heel position before we can start walking again. I also reward her with praise and treats when she's doing a nice loose-lead walk.

However she still thinks she's a sledding dog and would pull mercilessly if it weren't for the Pack Control Leader :)

For you??!!! Of course!

What size do you want? I have a medium and medium large (for the more voluptuous hound!) at home at the moment but I can also get you a small, large and extra large if you would like in the next week or so

Each beagle as I said in the earlier post goes out with one and it’s made a huge difference to them taking advantage and pulling on lead during the settling in period/trial period. Each family that has taken a beagle from us in the last 3 months has called us wanting to know where they can get them for their existing beagle as they can’t get over what a difference it makes!

Charlie HATES the harness so much as he knows the harness wins time and time again!

CBL- i don't suppose you have one i could borrow? :)

The Sensible and Senation harness http://softouchconcepts.com/products/sense_ible_harness.html hands down when fitted correctly has worked wonders with all the rescue beagles, we have now incorporated these as part of our adoption package and each beagle goes to their new home wearing one

I would have to agree with you crazy beagle lady. These harnesses are fantastic! If you go to www.petdogtraining.com.au/products.html there is a road test that I was involved in of the sensible harness compared to numerous other products.
