lindadiosa Posted August 13, 2009 Share Posted August 13, 2009 Hi guys, Have a bit of a dilemma with the puppy we were going to bring home this weekend from the breeder. The breeder contacted us just this Monday that they all had caught the chills, have diarrhea and have lost a lot of weight. They are now on antibiotics. She has then advised us to keep the puppy with her for a couple of more weeks. We are just wondering if this is all safe or should we just drop the sale and look to buy a puppy somewhere else?? She is already nine weeks this week. This breeder seems to know what she's doing but we felt a bit weird when we had to go and see the puppy at a park rather than at her house with all the other puppies and bitch present. Her reason: moving house. When we saw the puppy she looked really good as far as we were concerned but we feel that bringing home a puppy who's just been sick is probably not a good a idea. poodlefan Posted August 13, 2009 Share Posted August 13, 2009 (edited) I think the breeder retaining the pup for a while is in the pup's best interests. The stress of rehoming is not something you want a sick pup to go through. Breeders of dogs popular with dog thieves can be paranoid about people knowing where they live. Whole litters can be stolen by someone who presented as a legitimate buyer. However, unless this is a registered breeder I would buy elsewhere. A few breeders don't want people at their home (their choice) but I would have thought a park wouldn't be so great for a pup (in regards to parvo etc). I can see what you mean about breeder being paranoid. I guess that's valid. I wonder in regards to socialisation, if anything after eight weeks is too late to address even puppy school which is recommended between eight and nine weeks. I think its also the whole excitement we all have to know we have to wait more. We've set up her room bought all her stuff and were so looking forward to this weekend... Any suggestions??? This rings alarms bells for me but it could be genuine. Does the breeder have an ANKC prefix ? and will your puppy be registered ? if not then walk away now and go in search of an ethical registered breeder. No breeder should be sending a puppy home with an illness and the pup should be fully recovered before being transferred into your care. I would be asking for a vet cert, stating that the puppy has recovered from whatever the illness was and I would also be wanting a written guarantee from the breeder. However even if the puppies weren't sick I wouldn't buy from a breeder who was prepared to risk the health of a puppy by taking it to a public park. There are plenty of breeders around who have healthy puppies that you can visit at the breeder's home and also check out the environment, the dam and the rest of the litter, sometimes the sire will also be present. She actually said they might have gotten the chills because of that same day she brought them out to the park to show it to us. It was a cold day. The symptoms she said are diarrhea and weight loss. cowanbree Posted August 13, 2009 Share Posted August 13, 2009 The fact that the puppy has been sick wouldn't put me off as long as it had a clear bill of health from the vet before it come home but if I wasn't allowed to pick the puppy up from it's house that would put me off. Fair enough that they have been cautious about giving out their address to all and sundry but now that you have obviously passed all their checks and are getting a puppy there would have to be a very good reason why you shouldn't visit and moving isn't enough. She said they are still running around and being active. She bought the whole litter to the park? Were they on the grass or put on the ground? Or in the back of a car or something? There was us and another family coming to see them. She had already chosen the puppy for us and for them. We got there and we held her for about five minutes, she asked us a couple of questions and we gave her the deposit. All pretty straigh forward I guess. As far as the socialisation aspect goes, it shouldn't be a problem IMO if the breeder has been doing the right things. I got my boy at 10 weeks (10 hour flight with a stopover), and he was fine - had been well socialised by his breeder though. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

One of the boys from my last litter stayed here until he was 13 weeks old because his new family were going to be away when I would have normally let the pups go at around 10 weeks. He started Puppy Pre-School anyway and they were very complimentary at his socialisation and how much more advanced he was than other puppies his own age. There's something a bit strange going on there. Hopefully the puppys have certificates like this....
