Ons
My sister emailed me last night concerned about her border collie. He is about five. It appears that Cody hurt his back leg at Christmas time whilst at the beach. He became lame that night so my sister took him to the vet. The vet put him on anti inflams and it got better, but a few weeks later it was sore again. This time the vet did xrays etc and although nothing showed up thought it was a partial tear in the cruciate ligament. My sister decided on conservative treatment so weight loss, exercise program and carprofen injections, This seemed to work but a couple of nights ago there was a storm and when they let him inside he bolted up and down the stairs and the next morning the leg was sore again. A couple of days on anti inflams and he is still not right, zooming around and jumping on it most of the time but when eating he is not weight bearing on it at all and when quietly walking there is a definite limp. The vet has suggested taking him to a specialist and getting TPLO surgery done. This will cost about thousands which my sister has no problems about because he is such a loved dog. Her concern is having to keep him quiet for about 6 weeks for it to heal, crated for about 2 weeks. Cody is such an active dog and she is not sure how she can manage this and how he will cope. The question is does any one have any experience with convalescence after this type of surgery with active dogs? If so, do they have any hints on making his life more bearable during it? also I'm sure any other input about the surgery and perhaps if anyone says that they would only allow x vet to do the surgery would be helpful too, she is in Melbourne. Many thanks Edited August 8, 2009 by onsntillnflash

puggy_puggy
There are quite a few threads on TPLO surgery on DOL if you do a search. Wing Tip Wong is a great specalist surgeon and based at Melbourne Uni's Werribee campus.
Tru Borders
Hi onsntillnflash. I am going through this as we speak. My 3 year old Siberian is on day 4 Post Op. My thread might be of some help to you. Also on the first page there is a link to another thread that I used before the Op to ask advice. I suggest reading it and then ask any questions you have http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=173484
