Tooth Loss

Hi,

I have just noticed my 5 year old ACD has lost a lower incisor. It has happened today but there is no blood and it appears as though the root has gone as well.

I am assuming this is not normal. Is it something I should be worried about or does this happen occasionally. Her teeth are perfect with no build up.

I know humans lose teeth due to gum disease but her gums look healthy.

She has just had a battle with an empty plastic flower pot so I will check it isn't sticking out of that.

Maybe you could ring your vet for advice? I know with humans if you knock out a perminate tooth you should put it in a glass of milk straight away to stop it from drying out and get to the dentist straight away so they can insert it back into the socket.

Specialist vets can replace lost teeth if they're kept alive, but I'm not sure if regular vets would know how to go about it? Could be wrong of course.

You can get implants, but they're really pricey (the vet dentist specialist whose lecture I attended quoted about $5000 per tooth to us for an artificial replacement incisor... ouch!)

If she's lost it due to trauma, and it doesn't appear hurt her, I wouldn't worry about it. My old boy lost bits of most of his incisors and all of his canines from chewing on things, and it didn't slow him down one bit.

But call your vet if you're concerned. ;)

I have checked with my vet and she said that tooth loss happens.

Provided the socket looks clean and she doesn't appear in pain, it should heal over.

Obviously, if the wound starts to look infected then bring her in.
