Dova
I've turned into a herding tragic & the dogs looooove it, my instructor is back & we're off for a lesson tomorow "I'm so excited, I just can't hide it" & you know the rest of the song . We also had a good run in obedience Sunday & I felt pretty damn good, so I think I've learned competing can be fun as long as the dogs are enjoying it too . BeagleBoys2
Why do I compete? Well I have been competing with Beagles for 6 years now. I remember when I first started getting into obedience and agility. People would make comments like, "Oh a Beagle!" or "I'd rather train a zebra than a Beagle." The second comment being my all time favorite. Anyway, those comments spurred me into proving a point. A Beagle like any other breed can succeed at anything with a bit of committment and understanding of the breed. After reaching Open Obedience with my first trialling Beagle the comments changed. All of a sudden I "didn't know how lucky I was to have a food motivated dog". Imagine that! Because my dog could be trained using food motivation I was lucky...of course has nothing to do with the work I put into my dogs and the fun we have together. In short, I compete to raise the ideals of the merry little hound, the Beagle. To raise the bar of expectation. But the trophies and the sashes are really nice too! (I type that as I gaze at the full trophy cabinet next to my desk) HAPPY TRIALLING!!! :D
RubyStar
Beagleboys - I love beagles and so glad when I see the very rare one out there competing! I would so love to see any videos if you have any of you and your Beagles in the obedience ring! A Beagle is on my list of future dogs (and to compete with, too!) :D
BeagleBoys2
Beagleboys - I love beagles and so glad when I see the very rare one out there competing! I would so love to see any videos if you have any of you and your Beagles in the obedience ring! :DA Beagle is on my list of future dogs (and to compete with, too!) :D FANTASTIC! When I lost Bailey I was devasted and had a strong feeling that my work with Beagles in the obedience world wasn't finished. It is my hope to dispell the myth that they are disobedient clowns. So the more Beagles competing and competing well out there the better!! I don't have any videos of a full run out but my dog club did a training video and there are a few clips of one of one of my Beagles working. I'll see what I can do. Unfortunately, our current oldest Beagle, Potter trials only if he must. I don't trust his performance so I don't work with him anymore...my husband does. But I am currently working with Nuevo who I hope will be my rising star in the ring. He's 20 months old and nearly there. I've attached a pic of Nuevo on lead in the show ring. The lead is rather tight in that shot but he works well on a loose lead. Talk about getting great stand for exam experience...the show ring has been fantastic in that regards! Nuevo's recall always gets a laugh because he generally throws in a little leap along the way which is so cute. At one trial, with Bailey, I had a judge nearly miss telling me to do the drop in the drop on recall exercise. She apologised afterwards and explained she was just so mesmerized by his movement and the ears. :D

huski
In short, I compete to raise the ideals of the merry little hound, the Beagle. To raise the bar of expectation. Shelley - my very first day ever at Metro I was walking around doing the intro night, watching all the classes. Aldo came along for a chat and I mentioned I had a beagle pup who was an absolute terror. He did a demo with one of your boys (sorry - I can't remember if it was Potter or Bailey) and I had never been so amazed! It was very inspiring. I think my jaw was literally on the ground

As you know it is SO rewarding.

There is nothing like the feeling you get when you have success in training, from trialling to even just having the dog 'get' the new command you have been teaching them I remember back then watching Aldo with one of your boys and thinking 'no way can my dog do that!' but as we have progressed I can actually see it being a reality

They are proud moments...I remember the first time I felt Bailey brush against my calf in a right-about-turn. My heart sang! I was in the trial ring and really had to focus on continuing because I really just wanted to tell him how wonderful I thought he was. :p
RubyStar
You've really made me want that Beagle to trial, sooner But no, want to get my 2 Labs somewhere first then think I will keep my plans of my third dog being something else and then 4th dog perhaps the beagle, as by then, I hope to have a better understanding of how to train better and get the best out of a beagle! They're gorgeous little things, totally fell in love with this light coloured pup at a dog show and wanted to pinch her But I keep hearing horror stories of them being escape artists. Training worries I can handle, Ruby was a bit of a horror pup in her social ways, it's just the escape artist bit that worries me! Please tell me it isn't as bad as I've heard! The first day we got our very first Beagle...I left the front yard gate of his kennel wide open! He was happily sitting in his bed when I realised in horror what I had done. I have never had an escape artist. Then again we do a lot with our dogs which I think helps prevent them getting bored during the day when we are at work. Plus we have three dogs in the yard so they entertain one another. Schedule: Monday - Obedience training Wednesday - Agility or Ring Run Out Thursday - Agility (different grounds) Saturday - Obedience training (different grounds) Training on Saturday may be given a miss if we are showing, lure coursing or off camping and doing field work. It's a dog's life at our place. Edited August 6, 2009 by BeagleBoys2
