Feeding After Dental

Bianca is going in for another dental tomorrow morning - she only had one in January - and whilst I've got her dinner sorted out, does anyone have any suggestions re what I could give her for brekky? At night, she normally gets hunks of beef and kibble, I'll change that to mince and rice or pasta for a few days. In the morning, she normally gets a chicken frame or wings. Should I just give her a smaller serve of what she gets at night? I would imagine she's going to be too sore for bones, but am trying to think of anything else.

Looks like bones are not going to be enough to keep the plaque at bay in her mouth. I try to keep her meat pieces large too, but I think she only eats out of one side of her mouth. One side is pearly white, the other is disgusting.

Is she having extractions, or just a scale and polish?

At this point, I'm not sure. Vet didn't really say - it was pretty obvious something needed to be done. I was actually a bit peeved b/c I thought they were still a bit dodgy after the last clean. Would just a scale and polish make the mouth hurt? If not, could I continue with her same diet if that's all that happens? And if an extraction or more?......

If she has extractions your Vet will probably advise not to give her mince as that can get into the cavity and cause infection. Soft food but chunky is what I have fed after my greyhound had teeth removed.

If it's just a scale and polish, her normal diet would be fine. It's just like what we have done when we go to the dentist for a general clean and check up. Best thing would be to wait until your vet discharges her as they will be able to tell you exactly what was done and discuss an appropriate diet for her for the following days.

The mouth is very quick to heal, so even if she has had some teeth out, she should be back to normal within a couple of days.

Sorry guys, only just got on again. Bianca is 7 so I wasn't happy about two anaesthetics in 6 months. Anyway, she's home now and really good. No teeth removed, just cleaned and a course of ABs for inflamed gums. I gave her softer food tonight, but I'll give her her normal frame for brekky, and tomorrow she'll be back to kibble etc. I thought she'd want to take it easy, but no, asked for her walk (even tho I took her this morning to empty out before we went to the vets), and jogged all the way - slowly for her, walking my feet off for me LOL.

Pity actually (joking). I'd cooked some rice in the microwave - just bunged some in an icecream container, threw in some water and cooked it on high for 20mins. Best damn rice I've ever cooked, including in the rice cooker. If I'd spread it out on a tray in the fridge to dry, it would be perfect for fried rice.

This wouldn't apply to this dog, but a dog that has had extractions is best fed chunks of steak, small enough to swallow but too large to get stuck in the cavities.

If this dog has had two dentals in six months, I would consider using a toothbrush, especially if you are feeding a soft diet with kibble.
