RubyStar
I'm looking to buy some Vitamin E capsules to pierce and rub into Millie's nose as it's very dry (one of the things I thought I'd try after searching DOL for a few hours tonight) - but my question is, do I get 1000IU or 500IU? What is the difference and which is better suited for what I want to use it for? I'm thinking of using a combination of the Vitamin E caps and Lucas' Papaw Ointment to help relieve it, does anyone see any issues with me using both? (ie. papaw in the morning, Vit E at night). Thanks!
Stitch
I give 100IU Vitamin E capsule to my medium sized dog every day - this is the dose as advised by naturapath, as the normal human doseage would be too great. I haven't rubbed it on though - just administered it orally. Perhaps when rubbed on the dog doesn't get as much however I should think it would last all of 10 seconds on the nose before it gets licked off. I also give 1 capsule of Fish Oil - all internally. Paw Paw cream is very good - I can't see a problem giving both as long as the Vitamin E was the 100IU doseage.
rijbiz
I used Vit E oil when one of my girls got her ear ripped. Only didn't buy capsules, but a bottle of the oil from the chemist and rubbed it on - that way no wastage. It worked really well but was expensive. For noses, I just use paw paw ointment. RubyStar
Thankyou Perhaps I will just try the Papaw for now and see how that goes, as it's cheaper than the capsules and it sounds like it may do the trick! I use vaseline currently and it does make it look better if I keep up the application, but it isn't curing it If that doesn't work, I will then try the Vit E caps, and distract her with some nice treats right after application
sas
The reason for a dry nose would unlikely be cleared up by a topical treatment on a permanent basis, perhaps it would be ideal to give oraly and topicaly? Do you know the reason for the dry nose? Perhaps a visit to a Natural Treatments Vet could assist? Topical applications to a dogs nose don't stay there very long unless quickly absorbed hehehe
RubyStar
No idea what is causing it. She had it when she came to me last year. Vet has said it is nothing to worry about, but will be asking them to check it again in a few weeks when we're due back at the vet. A lot of researching on DOL last night revealed a lot of vets have said the same thing to others as well, and a fair few people haven't found a cure, just a relief aid for it such as vaseline, papaw and vit E. I might ask the vet to do some tests on it though. Vaseline works, even though most gets licked off Distracting with a treat directly after application and getting her to do a few tricks while holding the treat as a distractor lets it sink in for that little bit longer
4 Paws
I have a dog with a dry cracked nose with the crack being there for around 10 months and would imagine it to be quite painful I have tried quite a few creams over that time including pawpaw cream, vaseline, amolin, barrier cream but about a week ago I deceided to give Palmers Cocoa Butter Bottom Butter(it's for babies bottoms)a go and within about 2 days the split actually had a scab on it and now it has just about completely healed so I'm wrapped. It has pure coconut butter, vitamin A,D and Pro Vit B5.I apply it 2-3 times a day I just purchased the little trial size they sell i Big W for just under $2 Edited July 26, 2009 by 4 Paws
RubyStar
Thankyou 4 Paws, I might try that then! Nothing like using something that someone has actually had some success with!
Red Fox
I use a bit of FuzzYard Organic Paw Balm on Kei's nose when it looks a bit dry. Its worked well for us and smells nice too. Also completely harmless if the dog decides to lick it off http://www.naturalpetstore.com.au/d/FZPB01...-paw-balm-100g/ I wonder if applying some Manuka Honey would help Millies nose? Would be worth a try.
