8 Week Golden Retriever Puppy Has Diahorrea- Help!

Hi, I'm new to this so wasn't sure where was the best place to post this......

My 8 week old Golden Retriever pup has has the runs for 5 days now and I'm freaking out due to a past experience with a very sick puppy who passed away at 14 weeks (first sign of illness was diahorrea!).

This puppy is from a registered breeder and I have not changed her food. A friend of mine has her sister and does not have this problem. We also have a chocolate lab puppy who is the same age and he is fine. She hasn't eaten any toxic plants as she does not go outside and when she does I am with her.

May be paranoid, but not taking any risks what so ever! Booked in to see the vet today!

Any suggestions would be VERY MUCH welcomed!

Hi There

I would have gone to the vet on the first day. Puppies are fragile and I would not risk anything until i get a good professional diagnosis first.

Hang tight and just get pup to the vet! It is too dangerous to do anything else without proper medical advice given your pup's age

Yep, vet visit in order. Five days is a long time to wait.

What did the other pup die of.. I hope like hell it wasn't parvo and within the last 12 months.

Take a faecal sample with you if you can. Ask about a test for coccidia.

Is Sahla ok - have you been to the vet yet???

Keep her hydrated if possible - if she will not drink water - try melting some honey and mixing it with cooler water till its drinkable in temp!

Edit - are the stools just soft or are they like the squirts cause if just soft it could be the stress of leaving the litter.

Thanks for the comments.

I've spoken to a few vets and they have all told me not to worry about coming in so I have delayed coming in until now. They've told me that it is a common puppy problem, but given the history of our last pup I'm not going to wait any longer.

We tried to give a faecal sample with our last pup and the vets didn't want it. I will ask the vet again this time.

Parvo was cleared with our last pup (we think it may have been genetic although we are still paranoid and very cautious) and this pup is not at the same place where our Marley was.

The diarrhoea appeared to be getting better during the week, but is not so good today. She is still drinking, eating and playing as normal.

Are you adding anything to her food such as yoghurt?

Hi First Time Puppy,

Thanks for your reply!! Sahla copies our other pup and vice versa so when one drinks the other does so she is still drinking plenty. Her stools were soft for most of the week, but today it's runny so that's why I'm worried. At first we thought it may have been a change of water and environment so I wasn't too worried, but now I'm starting to get worried!!

I'll post the results after we go to the vet this afternoon.

I haven't yet, although this has been recommended to me. I was also going to give her boiled chicken and rice for dinner tonight, with maybe some corn flour.

Sounds like you need a new vet

Best of luck - I'm sure it's nothing serious - my boy did it to me over night at 5mths vomiting and the trotts all cause the little cheek had found a egg shell that rolled under the fence from neighbours compost and must have been a little too off for a baby's stomach!

Sorry was the appointment this arvo - if not, go anyway!!!

Edit - Why I say that is cause I waited for 10 hours and then went and it ended up costing me $600 cause he had to be put on a drip!

I agree. How a vet can treat a puppy with life threatening diarrhea and never check a faecal sample is more than a bit frightening. I'd have thought they would eliminate a lot of other causes before labelling the death of a 14 week old pup from a disease which included diarrhea as "genetic".

Hi Sahla,

Miss Pink  Unless you have added something different to her diet she shouldn't still be mushy from being upset at leaving her litter mates. She hasn't eaten the other puppies food that is diffenrent by any chance??

Best for the vets to check her out though.

Come join us in the Goldie part. Cass & Jen are both there.

Look forward to seeing picks of Sahla.

Are you giving her milk?

Are you? I ask because milk will cause diarrhoea in a lot of puppies.

Sorry Miranda I missed your comment.

No I'm not giving her anything apart from water and Artemis dry puppy food. Nothing else at all.

Hi Sahla... sorry, i was under the impression that the stools were just soft, 3 times per day which isn't all that unusual for a puppy in a new environment but if it's diarrhea a vet visit is in order

Also, if she has snuck in some of Pancho's food that would give her a bit of an upset too.

Hi Addicted2Gold and Goldielover!!!

Lovely to see you on here (have to admit that Cass did help me to post the message...). No she hasn't been outside apart from when I'm with her and anything that goes into her mouth I quickly grab out (bit paranoid!!). Pancho and Sahla eat separately as well so no I can't see how she could've had any of his food. She's still eating, drinking, running around and playing with toys it's just the diarrhoea.

I still think that it may be a normal settling in thing (it is like a soft stool but with more liquid around it and a bit worse today than other days) but I wanted it checked out by a vet (given my previous experience). The vet has given her some

Scourban 100ml to try to clear it up, but if it doesn't clear up inthe next couple of days then she will go off this for a couple of days and then we will do tests on her stool (if you can call it that!).

I tried to call you today Goldielover to see what you thought, but then I remembered that you are back at work after all of the hard work!!! So Cass showed me how to use this forum here!!

Fingers crossed the meds will work - she liked it at first and sat for me waiting as if it was a treat...... she wasn't so keen for the second syringe though! I can see a battle on my hands!!
