Muru Cycles
I'm hoping that this thread is still alive. I've started at page one and read it all the way through. Yes... really. My wife and I decided, after around 10 months research, that we wanted a Samoyed puppy. But we are in a rental. After a couple of months, we finally plucked up the courage to approach our landlord. We included links to articles on the breed and our landlord approved! We talked to people, met breeders and visited Allen and Kylie @ Anaky (we live in the Blue Mountains). They let us brush Pan. And watch a washing and then assist in the drying. WOW... like being in a cloud of white hair. Our puppy was born just two weeks ago last Sunday. He should come home to us early Sept. We're getting a boy. My wife says that's so I'll have someone of a similar IQ to keep me company... (don't know what she meant by that) My wife is a pre-school teacher. So I'm hoping that her training may come in handy to help with training of the puppy. (they certainly helped her to train me) I'm self employed and work from a warehouse/office. Our plan is for our puppy to be with me all day. I've set up an office cubicle sized space that will be covered with waterproof carpet tiles, then a layer of lino'. A large(ish) exercise pen and his cage. My questions... a) is my plan to have him with me 5 days a week practical? b) at XMAS we'll be visiting my wife's family in Melbourne. They have a cat. (she will be one year old in December) Our boy will be 6 months old. Will they get on? or can I count on him to give the cat a hard time? Thanks for all the help you've already given us in the last 31 pages. DogNerd
Congratulations!! My boy Barney is from Kylie, absolutely beautiful Samoyeds in looks and temperament :) I think your plan is great, not many owners would do that. The only issue I could think of is you may need to practise leaving him alone every now and then to teach him how to amuse himself (with toys, food, etc not messing up the house!) Regarding cats, I have cats and Barney gets along with them well. He sometimes forgets his size but the cats are quick to get out of his way  He certainly doesn't want to eat them. The puppy is from Anaky, yeah? I think Kylie has cats anyway so puppy would probably be used to them. He may want to harass the cat at 6 months of age but if you're firm with him and teach him that that's not on I think you'll be fine... You could also invest in a soft crate if he isn't a furniture destroyer that way it's easy to take when you travel and you have somewhere to put him if he needs to be out of the way. Or just use a standard crate. Anyway there are plenty of knowledgeable people on this forum who'll probably pop in to help! There's a Spitz sub forum too so you'll have to post pics of puppy when you get him  You've chosen a great breed :D
DogNerd
Here's a pic of Barney after we brought our rescue kitty home :) Barn was about 2 here but still a puppy in the brain ;)
Bjelkier
Congrats on choosing the best breed around ;) I agree with DogNerd, your plan to have pup with you is a great idea. I work from home and my samoyeds are with me all the time, mostly they just lounge around at my feet but it's obvious they enjoy having me with them during the day. As for cats, my dogs are from a different breeder (although my Dante is Pan's son) and I've found them to be a little bit too intense for our cats, despite growing up with them and meeting them at their breeders house. They never hurt the cats but they do tend to get a bit over excited and will chase them if they run. If you can I'd suggest getting your puppy to meet a few dog savvy cats before your christmas trip or when you get down there keep pup on lead for awhile just to see how he goes with the cat. I'd say he'd be fine, samoyeds are such friendly dogs, but the cat might not be too thrilled with the dogs attention and you don't want puppy to get swiped and possibly hurt. But then all Samoyeds look adorable. We've been watching sooo many youtube videos... To be honest though... I wasn't worried about our puppy scaring/hurting the sister inlaws cat. In fact, I was kinda hoping that he'd terrorise her and keep her away from me. (I'm allergic to cats, inside 5 minutes and my eyes and nose are running... I'm a mess) We met one of Kylie's cats when we were there. Quite old. But once again... inside a couple of minutes and I was sniffling. Yet I was fine, minutes later when blow drying Pan surrounded by a thick cloud of white hair. We've got a std steel crate for home and I was thinking of getting a similar one for work. But I take your suggestion about a soft one for travelling. Thanks for that. 5 more weeks (or thereabouts)
Snippy
Hello there all my fellow Samoyed lovers Just wondering what the best shampoo/conditioner is for washing Samoyeds in. My boy is obviously not a show dog, but I do take pride in the appearance of my pets so having him looking in "show condition" is fine by me  I have done a bit of research on the net and found some very different opinions on the matter. From woolwash to human shampoo and conditioner to bluo and blue food colouring in the rinse. Also many seem to like the CC products. Sometimes it is hard to tell if people genuinely approve of these things or if there is a commercial interest there. Anyway, his coat has been terribly neglected in the past and I have been doing my best with grooming him and using a spray conditioner and it has improved his coat from the haystack that it was, but it still needs TLC. I am looking for a shampoo, conditioner and also a coat spray (perhaps with sunscreen in) for him for the future. Thanks in advance Snippy
Bjelkier
I use CC white on white or Panagenics for my crew. With the CC make sure you use a conditioner as I've found frequent use can dry the coat and make it yellow. CC After Bath is a good product. If you go with Panagenics it's good to get the whole system and follow the instructions, the dogs turn out great and it cuts drying time. A great grooming spray is Panagenics Hydrating Spray, absolutely brilliant stuff. I've never bothered finding one with sunscreen, if the coat is well conditioned and cared for you shouldn't need it. Those products are pretty pricey, if you're after something cheaper and easier to acquire, Fido's White and Bright is a good shampoo and you can grab it from PetBarn, the others you will have to order online. We're based in the Blue Mountains and searched for a NSW breeder. After much research and some very strong recommendations we ended up with Kylie at Anaky Samoyeds. Kylie and Allen were very helpful. They invited us down to meet them and their dogs. We washed and dried and brushed our Tuckers sire... Pan. This was so that we had a good idea what we were getting ourselves into in regards to grooming. I can't sing the praises enough for Kylie. She talked us through any silly questions we asked. She has been available for us to call if we have any concerns. Tucker was at the higher end of the cost scale. But he's become a major part of our family and I can't imagine our world without him. We did our research on puppy pricing beforehand and I think you will find most (professional) breeders are at the upper end of your price scale. Another option to consider is a rescue Samoyed from the Victorian Samoyed club. I know that the NSW club has a rescue group and we came very close to going that way. Rescue dogs (from the NSW group) are often at the lower end of your pricing scale. Hope that helps a little. Wayne.
samoyedman
Fellow samoyed owners, at what age did your dog mature? By that I mean slow down a lot and not be as puppyish. My fella is 8.5 years old and still like a pup. He still gets the zoomies when we return from walks and wants to play, chase other dogs etc. Does any other breed stay as playful as long as the sammy?

Tibor who was 15 when he crossed to the Rainbow Bridge could still do a jig & dance to get to the small pieces of dried liver ahead of the 13 month old Vizsla puppy. Gabor was still a puppy at 14 too. My friend in the USA has Samoyeds. Her oldest is 12 and acts like 12 months still. His litter brother & sister are super puppy like too. I never knew sammies were so popular :) I think Sammies are one of those breeds that everyone admires, but then they start reading about them and realise they are too much dog (or hair) for them I know lots of people who have always wanted one, my Mum being one of them. samoyedman
Tell me about it. It's on my clothes and bedsheets. It gets in everywhere no matter what I do. But I knew that before I got my samoyed. And what's a little bit of hair between friends. :)
Bjelkier
Oh yes, Samoyeds are very popular. I've had two separate occasions where entire tour buses of Asian tourists stuck their hands through my car window to pat the dogs. That was intense  As for slowing down.....I'm yet to meet one that ever has slowed down. My friends girl was 15 and she still acted like a pup when she wasn't too sore. Havanese don't seem to grow up, they're very playful little souls.
samoyedman
OTOH this breed is arrogant and headstrong. I'm convinced they think they're the ones in charge. I've come across a few breeds in my time but none of them compare to the samoyed when it comes to stubborness. For that reason they mightn't be best option for first time dog owners. Its easy to get carried away with their beauty and playfulness, but unless you keep a firm hand, they'll soon have you under their paw!
Melo
Hi, have not been on here for a few years, but sadly my 4yo Samoyed 'Best Mate' Cooper got sick just before Christmas and despite the efforts of vets and specialists we sadly lost him. I am still devastated and grieving the loss of the most gorgeous boy. Edited February 8, 2015 by Melo
Bjelkier
Adults do become available from time to time and when they do they tend to be snapped up pretty fast. I know there is a 10 month old female available in Sydney right now but no males. There is the NSW Samoyed rescue and although you are in SA in might be worth chatting to them. They could have a dog suitable or know of one closer to you.
