Elfin
Continuing on my "test bender", I would like to find out where I can get my dogs DNA certified for Factor VII (bleeding disorder). I spoke to Genetic Technologies today, and they were very unhelpful. They don't do the test and could not offer an alternative lab that did. Nor could they say whether or not they would be able to test in the future. Pennsylvania Uni test in the US, so it CAN be done. Once again, this disease is NOT known in my breed in Australia, and my dogs all have no problems clotting. I am interested in keeping in line with international testing standards for the breed by testing my dogs voluntarily. Any information gathered (on any of these genetic tests) will be presented to my breed club at our next commitee meeting. Thank you in advance! Elfin
OK... Does anyone use or know of a DNA testing lab (for animals) in Australia other than Genetic Technologies? Google is not being my friend.
dancinbcs
Email the lab in Pennsylvania and ask them if anyone in Australia is approved to do the test. If they developed the test in the US they may not have released the details to anyone else so may be the only ones doing it. If this is the case just send the DNA samples to them. Alternatively if they have released the details and patented the test they may have approved other labs that were interested in doing it. GSS/GTG are the Australian agent for all the tests owned by Optigen plus they do some developed by other labs. The legalities of the patents are quite complex so certain tests can only be done by certain labs. This is the problem with compulsory profiling. Each lab has different patented processes so all the testing would have to be with the one lab and there would be no competition to keep the price down. In other words the results are not transferable from one lab to another so you would not be able to choose where to get the profiling done. Any lab, including the universities can do profiling but if you have your dog done with lab A and then some one who uses him wants their litter profiled by lab B you would need to have the stud dog profiled again by lab B for them to be able to do the litter. Hope this makes sense to you.
Elfin
Thank you, dancinbcs! That is exactly what I wanted to know. (The second bit also sounds like a nightmare!)
